Aye, good luck Tom!

On the subject of oils, you noticed there are 'quite a few' differing opinions, but the main thing is that it meets the specs required when the car was new (just about all oils sold nowadays will do, as they are continually improving); and is the correct viscosity. The latter will depend on the temperature range the car is used in, but a 10w40 or 15w40 will cover all the temperatures likely to be seen in the UK! Many people like the nice warm feeling of putting in an expensive oil, and unless you run two identical vehicles back to back with different oils you'll never know whether there are differences in engine longevity...

Gearbox oil - EP just means it has Extreme Pressure additives, i.e. for transmissions which contain a differential. The GL number (I think GL-5 for the BX) will denote what level of EP additives it contains. I think 75w90 is the correct viscosity but Haynes or a handbook should confirm. Some people have reported differences between brands, but I haven't personally. I'm never sure whether any reported difference after a change is down to to the brand of the oil, or simply the fact it's new...

I've avoided big brand oil for years. Most of what's gone through the 2CV has been the cheapest stuff I could find - usually at supermarkets. It's sometimes had 20w50 but I prefer 10w40 for winter starting.

The original engine did over 170,000 miles, quite a few of those foot-to-the-floor. I'd say that's ok. It was just starting to burn a little oil. Not many small cars would lab up that sort of abuse! The only thing to watch really is that you don't put oil in that's too thin. Or put synthetic into a car with a freshly rebuilt engine. 2CVs respond very badly to that and effectively fail to run themselves in.

No luck with the job :( apparently the competition was very good, and I was rated as 3rd on the list -just incase the top two failed their CRB tests, but they didn't apparently. But it's not all bad, because Christmas stock is now flocking into the garden center, I have at least part time hours, potentially full time if they need me at one of the other centers (there are 3, and I have worked at the closest other one last summer+christmas) so could still ditch Domino's and give the poor astra (and me) a rest from indecent hours and plebian people!

Nevermind Tom :( . Whenever things don't work out for me I just pick myself up, dust myself down and tell myself; if at first you don't succeed . . . maybe failure is just your style.

I'm glad I was young when I was really, in my day you could pretty much wander in anywhere and ask for a job, and the only question asked was "when can you start"..
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Image Tom, so sorry to hear that. I remember how much the merry go round sucks, well done on being positive and keep trying/smiling :) There's so much competition out there at the moment that anyone who even gets to interview almost certainly capable of doing the job, so try not to take it to heart too much.

Chin up Tom, there will be plenty of other opportunities out there. I know it can be demoralising getting knocked back, but just keep a positive mind. :) Re what Doc said, I think the only job nowadays where you can be pretty much guaranteed a start is HGV driving. My current job being a prime example, had my " interview " on the Tuesday afternoon and was driving the truck to Scotland approx 6 hrs later.

Happy birthday Tom Image - don't do anything he ^ wouldn't (which I think gives you a reasonably long leash). Have a great day :)

Plan for today? Attempt to, or pay someone to sort out the massively blowing downpipe of the astra. Yay :(

Thanks for the well-wishes :D

Could be worse, I spent one of my birthdays being attacked by a swarm of wasps when I tried to visit my mum (she was out!)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM!! =D>

Have a great Day! - well, as 'great' a day as is possible when you're a Vauxhall owner

Perhaps, your Mum was trying to tell you something Tim? I'd have taken the hint! :D
