My first BX

Post by Dollywobbler »

In 1999, I bought my first 'expensive' car. A 1992 BX19TGD in silver. A fine looking car. Set me back £1600 at the time. Proving what a natural I was with finances, I traded it in six months later for a Daewoo Matiz... (and got £560 for it! Idiot!). That was a low point for me. I don't buy cars if debt is involved anymore.

First big car (my second car) 2.2 16v petrol. Nice, surprisingly comfy, very very fun on wet roads, bloody expensive insurance and 24mpg max

First BX, delage red TGE.

Still miss it, it was very nice albeit with many little bits of 'character'. Given a while i'd have had it up to sparkling condition though! Only thing I disliked was the interior, it was the pink and grey type fabric - not sure if it was faded or not though.

That's very nice.

Regarding your Frontera, I dream of 24mpg with my Maverick! 22 is the best I've managed so far.

Thanks, it was an awesome car to have when I was 18! A bit underpowered though, the C22XE engine was just a stroked and bore width-reduced omega 22XE. If I get another one (I will be needing a tow car soon and want a 4x4 for winter use) I may get the same engine and fit a redtop head (from astra GTE 16v etc) for some more power - who knows maybe a turbo too?

What engine has you're maverick got Ian? Don't know anything about them, are they the ones that look like nissan terrano's?

Maverick IS a Nissan Terrano. Ford's involvement was limited to badges! Has a 2.4-litre 12-valve four-pot, effectively the same as the 240SX. I should have gone turbo diesel really. Oh well!

I was 20 when I bought my first BX. Might have been a 1.9 diesel but after three years of knackered 1-litre Fiesta and 602cc Citroens, my mates were amazed at how quickly it accelerated!

My frontera was the fastest/biggest etc car of all of my mates at the time, until one of them played with his 306 D turbo's fuela nd turbo pressure screws - always knew it was him coming as he would be followed by his own personal smog :D it was quick, but only on boost.

12v 4 pot? So 1 inlet and 2 exhaust valves? or the other way? I've never cone across a 3 valve per cylinder car engine before. What would the benefits be over an 8v or 16v 4 pot then?

2 inlet, one exhaust. The Japanese really went in for it for a time. Some Ferraris have 5 valves per cylinder!

The 2 and 1 theory is that you get the best of both worlds. The improved efficiency and punch of a multivalve engine, but the torque of a twin-valve unit. It behaves more like a 16v though. No torque to speak of at all!

Sadly it seems my first BX hasn't been on the road since 2004. Bean tins by now I suspect.
