Turbo Woes...

I'm not really a new member - just lost my password, forgot my name - the usual maladies associated with advancing years...
Anyhow, until a week ago, my TZR had vivid acceleration, usually accompanied by a Vulcan-bomber-on-take-off trail of unburnt stuff from the back. Suddenly it doesn't do this and the acceleration is anything but vivid.
Is there a way of checking the turbo? (without taking it off) - Haynes is vague on the subject, and it looks like a special tools job.
Any advice gratefully received

Does it make a wooshing sound? Had the turbo air feed pipe come off on my 306 some years ago. That did impact performance as it was just blowing air around the engine bay. Turbo failure itself is usually either bearings (horrible noise as it spools up) or seals (smoke).

Air feed pipes are the first port of call I think, although I would think that if a 'blow' pipe had come adrift, it would blow all manner of crap and oil into the engine bay? Bearings sounded OK before it stopped working, and there is no smoke at all (for the first time ever). Is it possible that the wastegate if jammed open?

The upside of all this is that I've just done 330 miles on 5.5 gallons of diesel!

It is of course a TZD, not a TZR (bloody touchscreens)

Unlikely to be a turbo problem IMO, as you would tend to get more smoke, not less if there is insufficient air. You can check my loosening the pipe to the intercooler at the cambelt end - there should be a whoosh when the engine is revved. My guess would be either the pipe from the intercooler to the fuel pump is damaged, or the diaphragm in the boost fuelling controller has split. That would mean that you're not getting any extra fuel under boost, which would fit your symptoms.

check also the small diameter pipe from the inlet manifold to the top of the injection pump. If that is leaking then the pump won't 'see' the boost pressure in the manifold and so will fuel accordingly - i.e. like for a NA. Steve

That's it! Its a Bosch pump, and on the leading edge of the round component on the top there is the remains of a small rubber tube which has sheared and disappeared. Will inspect in daylight today. Thanks for all your help.

That will be the hose then, as me and Steve suggested. On the lower edge of the front of the intercooler you should find either the remains of a hose, or a stub (pointing downwards). Simply connect that to the round thing on top of your pump and all should be well again! (There is a diaphragm within the 'round thing' which can split, but unlikely to have also failed simultaneously).
