Carb Refurbishment

Post by Rich »

Hi all.

My TRS is in need of a carb refurb.

The throttle spindle has worn then body so that fuel leaks out when the car is switched off and air is sucked in when the car is running. Allied to this I still have the problem of it miss firing/ flooding itself.

I have two questions:

Firstly, does anyone know of a company who can refurb carbs?

And secondly, I know I can get a new replacement Webber. What advantage would this give? (There are £250 worth of disadvantages :( ) The car currently runs a Solex.

Thanks for the help.

Rich.

I just got used to it, a good bit of throttle when coming out of bends cures the stuttering and foot to the floor with continued cranking for hot starting , the only thing that pee's me off is when it tries to die on my drive after a good run ,

Hmmm!

That is what mine does. The problem is that being an auto, it is now undrivable as it won't tick over without a bootfull of throttle. Even then it stinks of fuel and chugs like an old tug boat. The plugs are also being sooted up in a couple of miles.

If you buy a Weber it might not be the DRTC that was the Weber alternative fitted at the time so setting up the carb may not be as easy if there's little documentation to go with it. Southern Carburettors (Merton) should be able to help but Google should help you find somewhere more local.

Many years ago this company was the place to go for all carb stuff, piston re-machining and the like. They only list garage equipment now but it might be worth asking if they can direct you on to whoever does that stuff now.

The chap who I bought my car off swapped his Solex for a Weber (don't know why). The float bowl seems to leak/evaporate very badly meaning very harsh starting, although this could be an isolated case. If you're patient it may be best to wait for somebody to break their car, sadly the bloke who was offering to break his Meteor last week ended up taking it straight to the dump in the end :(

took my mate out in the car tonight,
he's an oldschool mechanic and he felt the hesitation I get pulling away from roundabouts etc and the almost stalling I get sometimes could be a combination of weak mixture and weak bob weight springs in the dizzy, might be worth a look

Thanks every one for the replies. I don't really want to spend the best part of 250notes on a webber replacement when this MAY not solve the flooding/rough running problem. I am still trying to find a company to refurb my solex.

Any ideas still welcome :)

The symptoms I get are very similar. On a run with constant throttle there is a distinct hesitation. Then when I stop, sometimes the tick over goes very low(300 to 400RPM) and it chugs like mad stinking of fuel. If it dies, it is a bugger to start again. Holding the throttle at 2000RPM makes it run smoothly(ish) again. However, I'm sure mine is trying to flood itself. It stinks of fuel and the plugs are sooting up in only a few miles. Again being an auto it is damm near undrivable :(

I got my Pierberg refurbed with a guy in Worcester, one of those old carb-wizard type guys. It costs £200 odd for the full works, but because I gave my astra rather than posted him the carb it ended up costing me £300, but he set it up on the car, checked the timing and other stuff I can't remember and generally got it rnning perfect! It may be worth giving him a bell, apparently he is huge in the golf scene.

He is a pierburg specialist, but you could always try! His website no longer exists, but I have an email address which i'll PM you.

Have you tried;

I tried these guys today with no Joy. Eric, the chap I contacted basically pointed towards replacing the carb with a Weber. he said that refurbing the solex would be too expensive due to the cost (if bits are available) of replacement parts.

Hmmm!

Hmm indeedy, sounds like they can't be bothered to me! Isn't it funny that people suggest weber replacements for any moderate carb issues. Are they really that good? With my astra the pierburg is supposed to be quite superior to the 32/34 DMTL Weber with economy, running and cold starting - that is when the notorious automatic choke is working, which touch wood mine is, although not perfectly.
