Wanted-more wheel trims!

Post by merlyn »

I am not a happy bunny, after less than a month I have managed to lose one of my wheel trims! I drove up and down the roads looking but it was pouring and some of it was country lane with big grass verges. So I am now wanting either a replacement of the same type (and maybe some spares) or a whole new set. If getting a new set I need some advice on which ones would be appropriate and if anyone has some I would be interested in a purchase.

My poor car is now looking very uncared-for. This is the style of wheel trim that I have 3 of.

That one is quite a rare trim to try and replace I think Jane. I'll have a dig around amongst all those parts in the 'breaking TZD' thread and see if Shaun might know where he can put his hands on one - otherwise it might be a different set or speedlines. I'd be a bit gutted if I'd lost one of those. Can't you go back and have another look where you lost it?

It might be worth putting a 'wanted' up on the CCC CX forum?

I think Phil B's (Kermit) old BX (known as the Green Hornet) had these trims and as far as I know that's not destined for the road again.

Thanks for the advice guys, at least I have a couple of leads now. I would love to get the same ones but if there is anything else appropriate then I'd be happy to have a different set. There are some on a breaking bx estate on ebay which the seller has quoted £20 for but they are a bit tatty. I also will be getting in touch with the guy who admired my car in Oswestry last week as he had a few spare parts.

I'd be tempted to buy one of those anyway Jane, just as a back up (is it 20 quid for 1 or all 4?). Refurbishing them is fairly straight forward.

I've got several sets of No.5 if you or anyone's interested.. I periodically post up here about these but no one gets too excited! Would have to consider post from Germany too..

I have a suspicion there is one of those knocking about at work, I'll have a check when I get a minute, no promises on when that is though, we are very busy atm.

The ones on ebay are type 9 in the pictures above, I am fairly sure that it is £20 for the set but awaiting clarification. He also hasn't answered my question as to whether the clips are still present, has just sent me pictures of the wheel trims close up. If it is £20 for the set I will drive up to Macclesfield to pick them up, I have also asked if the car he is breaking has mudflaps as I currently don't have any on mine (I hope that if he does have some that they will fit my car).

In the mean time I will post on the CCC CX forum and if any like mine turn up lying around anywhere I would love to have them.

How does one refurb wheeltrims then?

When I refurbished the wheels I also did the wheeltrims - basically a good clean and then a re-spray.

They are also 'type 9' above - these clip onto the wheel at the wheelbolts - not at the rim - so he might not have any idea of what you mean by 'are the clips present' because there are none.

Before the refurb I thought there was perhaps a bit of movement of one of the wheeltrims - a noise that was unidentified. So when fitting the wheeltrims I put a few spots of silicone rubber where the trim meets the wheel - for this to work all surfaces need to be spotlessly clean of mud or oil so clean with alcohol first.

If your car doesn't have mudflaps you'll need all the struts to mount them as well. They are quite susbtantial and will be rusty. When I refurbed mine I cleaned thoroughly and re-painted - drilled and tapped for slightly larger bolts and used stainless steel bolts and nuts. I bit of a fuss but I think it's worth doing.

Thanks for that, he did get back to me and say that the wheel trims fit to the wheel fine, no mention of clips, I hadn't realised that they were a different fitting! It is £20 for the set so I will be getting them soon.
As for the mudflaps, it does sound like a lot of work but if he has them and the struts as well I may as well get them now and tidy them up when I get the time.

Regarding the mudflaps, he has replied saying that the car has the two front mudflaps only and that it has two clamps for one and three for the other, I am guessing that the struts that I need are what the clamps actually fit on to, am I right?
