How Big is my nut?

Post by Tim Leech »

Chaps does anyone know off hand the size of the plastic nut the that fits round the front wiper spindle and holds the plastic vent panel (below the bottom of the screen) in place. The biggest size socket I have is about 20mm which is much to small, I seem to think its a 32mm but cant be sure.

I cant get an adjustable round it due to the angle and I need to undo it so I can get the vent panel off to the painters on the DTR.

Cheers! :

Thanks Vince

All 4 of mine are in garages miles away from me at the moment, and want to get the right tools to hand when I head over.

Cheers

Just checked with the biggest spanner I could lay my hands on immediately, which is a 30mm. That didn't fit, but looks like a 32mm would be perfect.

Sorry to be slightly inconclusive.

Generally they're never that tight or difficult to remove. Normally just a pair of slip-joint pliers tip on (that is face-on to the nut) is usually more than sufficient to turn it.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

I normally use an adjustable spanner - as Jay said they aren't that tight - and being plastic you can't tighten them up that much on re-assembly either.

if you have a spare you can 'chisel' it off in the unwind direction with a screw driver and hammer.

Can you not get an adjustable on from above ie along the line of the windscreen? Seem to remember I managed it on the Mk1 as that nut hadn't been off from a very long time either. You don't have to move it much. Once it's 'cracked,' it'll undo by hand.

That's all I've ever done, even thought I own a 32mm socket! I've just been too lazy to determine what size it is...
