I apparently have a non-operational coolant level gauge, the type that fits on the back of the expansion tank. I would have thought this was a fairly simple float type switch which when the float lowers, breaks the circuit and shows the warning light on the dash. I wouldn't have thought there was much that could go wrong with it and the problem could be down to dodgy terminals. Do these switches go wrong and can they be repaired/ easily sourced & replaced?.
Don't want my new engine to be sabotaged by the cooling system as was the last one!
Is BX TZD coolant level switch repairable?

Common problem; dodgy terminals. My Hurricane has been on the blink for a while. I intend to replace the header tank and the bit that plugs into it from a scrap car. I'm over the 'oh shit, my cars engine is about to cook itself' now!
You could try giving the whole thing a squirt of WD40 or crimping together the connecting bit; that works - for a while.

Thanks Paul, I see - Do you know if the switch can be removed from the tank, and how? - If so I could try soldering the connectors

I'm not sure - I would have thought it was all a sealed unit (?) although someone far more technically qualified than me should be able to tell you for sure. It'll be easier for me to just replace the header tank - then wait for that one to go wrong!andycadabra wrote:Thanks Paul, I see - Do you know if the switch can be removed from the tank, and how? - If so I could try soldering the connectors

it's a very simple sensor in essence. It's just 2 prongs! Removal is easy too, it's just a twist fit in the tank.
You could try cleaning up the connectors, but it could also be the control box that lives inboard of the OS headlamp.. Check the multipin plug on that too, they corrode quite badly

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Great - Thanks! Twisted off, cleaned connectors, and put new terminals on the wires and all is working well, unlike the recently fitted bloody heater tap that won't close. Lucky the weather is mercifully cold..
