probably down to the baboooons at the tyre shops whacking them up with windy guns, then aiming the torque wrench at them and just clicking it off,
completely oblivious they are allowed to spin the wheel bolt's/nut up by air gun, but are then meant to back them off before applying the torque wrench set at the correct torque,

This happened to me and it required the efforts of a fat person and a breaker bar to get them offcitronut wrote:Birotor wrote:If any one has experienced this happening could you give brief details.... This has been reported with Xantias...

Re: BROKEN WHEEL BOLTS
Or when they attack one of those splined security headed bolts full pelt with the gun and immediately come over and say "your security nut is destroyed, we can't take this wheel off". Re: BROKEN WHEEL BOLTS
Tim: Thanks for the offer but I have no problems for a very good reason!
The problem has been extensively investigated with Porsche. Essentially it requires the presence of incorrect lubricant such as copper slip. It has been determined that the use of air guns in the presence of other than mineral oil on the threads will cause excessive tension exceeding the UTS of the bolt. Also if using a torque spanner DO NOT double click. The stated torque in the data books achieves the correct stress and strain (elongation) within the elastic limit of the steel with the threads lubricated with engine oil.
The Xantia section of CCC reported failures which led me to wonder if this had been noted in BXs.

/\
i belive most case's it is due to the above
i have watched tyre shops doing just that
the air gun has already wound the bolts/nuts up futher than they are meant to be torqued up,
so just clickung a torque wrench off which is set for the correct torque is just for the un/knowing customer to think the fitter!!!!!!/bodger is doing it properly

Re: BROKEN WHEEL BOLTS
I always take just the wheels into ANY tyre place, since I don't trust them to jack up the car correctly. Many just jack it up using any old part of the sill lip.
Different lubricants will require different torque figures, yes, but I think it would be unwise to suggest that engine oil is always the correct lubricant for all vehicles. The important thing is to use what, if anything is specified in the source of the torque figures. Some will specify a dry torque figure.
That said, I use copper grease on the threads and no torque wrench - just feel. I'm not claiming this is the correct way, but I've never had one snap or work loose in over 300k miles of motoring.

Re: BROKEN WHEEL BOLTS
I always do my bolts up tight, they usually make that screeching sound & then i know they are on tight, totally unscientific, but heyho. This is usually done after i've only done them up fingertight & whilst driving i notice a clonking sound, oops

Re: BROKEN WHEEL BOLTS
A mere 300,000 Miles! At 76 I can probably double that and more. Like most things in life doing it the right way usually pays off! Ive won many litigatious insurance claims in my business by proving correct practice was not followed and never lost a case...

Re: BROKEN WHEEL BOLTS
i never use an air/hammer gun onwheel bolts/nuts, but only a 4 legged spider and copper slip on the center boss of the hub and a smear on the bolts/stud theads,
also use the creak sound as an indicator of tight enough,
i do also go straight in with a 2 foot knuckle/breaker bar to loosen wheel bolts/nuts every time,
you can tell which ones have been to a tyre shop as you almost have to stand on the breaker bar to crack them off
