Not a BX – small vintage metalworking lather for sale

Post by KevR »

Like it says in the title.
I need to sell my 1920s Patrick lathe. I bought it a while back, stripped and restored it, made up a new drive system with a countershaft and tensioners and rebuilt the workbench that surrounds it (which in turn attaches to the original cast iron lags and drip/chip tray). I was all ready to install it but I've accidentally acquired a much more modern (1950s!) Myford lathe that's going to be a bit more practical for me (easier screw-cutting and speed changes etc). So this one has to go.

No point me going into technical details (because I don't really know any... ) but it's basically the same as the green one on THIS page.

Comes with 3-jaw and 4-jaw chucks (3-jaw has a damaged jaw so doesn't open all the way, and a faceplate. It hasn't been run since I rebuilt it as I never got it wired into the 3-phase, but it should all work fine.

Some tools may be available with it, and I have a spare 3-jaw Pratt-Burnerd chuck available seperately, but it needs a backing plate made to mate it to the headstock.

Currently driven by a brand new 3-phase motor and mechanical reversing switch, but I was planning to put it back to single phase (with no reverse) before sale, give that so few people have access to 3-phase. If anyone wants it as 3-phase though, we can do a deal...

Some pics below (hopefully). More available.

£275 or near offer.
It's currently in France, but I can bring it back to UK either just before or just after xmas.

All belts are new, and that's a Mazda MX-5 cambelt tensioner, in case you were wondering!

That's right nice that Kev. I wouldn't know what to do with it though. I suppose you're not offering postage? :D

Is that a press of some sort in the background?

I don't know what to do with it either! Or rather, I know what, just a bit shaky on the 'how'. That's why I think this Myford I've bought (a Super 7B) is a better bet for me to learn with. Also it was such a bargain I couldn't not buy it.

Could deliver for the right price.... ;o)

Yes, it's a cheapo Chinese hydraulic 12-ton press. I think it was about 85 quid from Ebay UK. Very useful, although I tried to press out a BX front wheel bearing from the wrong side and bent the central cross-piece! Got to make a new one at some point...

Still worked perfectly to press some bushes and bottom ball joints into a pair of Visa lower arms this afternoon though.

You're welcome - I think I got the better part of the deal, with ten minutes' pressing swapped for hours of assistance changing spheres!

You've made a nice job of that Kev =D> I have something similar waiting for me to do the refurb.

Thanks - I wish I could justify keeping it, but I really can't...
