Wanted - BE3 gearbox for 1.9D

Post by electrokid »

I'm going to try to fix the BX for as little money as poss - I've been quoted for a recon box fitted at a transmission specialist I know and trust - but it's slightly more than I want to spend on my next car

Theres one in the red shed but alas taking it out will be time prohibitive, unless ruffgeezer buys the remains, which looks unlikely now.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

That's a shame - would seem to have been a good arrangement.
alas taking it out will be time prohibitive,
That's at least half the problem - everyone's time is valuable... so that's a good cue for saying a big thank you to you for putting in the time to sort out whatever spares you can from the red shed =D> =D>

This might be you're lucky day, depending on how quickly you want one?

I have a BE3, known good, from a 405 19D n/a sat in the garage in Basingstoke.

We're up there for a few days from 3rd January if you wanted to collect it while were around.

£50 seems more than reasonable to a clubber?

That sounds brilliant Jay :D

Do you know what year 405 it's from ?

On Monday I'll check with my local BX repair man and get a ball-park price for him to do the swap - he doesn't have the time to do it before the new year anyway so early January is fine - and £50 - more than reasonable indeed Sir :D thank you.

It was a J plate, suffered a cooked engine at 88k (and had a rotten roof courtesy of a badly fitted roof rack).

That should be exactly the right jobby - according to Andy (the guy who does the work on my BX) there was a version where the controls were somehow different - I'll run this past him tomorrow and get a ball-park cost from him - should be fine - :D thanks Jay.

No problem.

FWIW there were only the

BE1 (early)
BE3/5 (later)

All BE3's had the same gate arrangement and the selector pivots are fully interchangeable (although the 405 is the same).

I had a chat with Andy today - he remembers there being some issues with fitting Peugeot gearboxes to Citroen but he can't remember what they were - he was very busy today but he's going to call his tame gearbox repair man tomorrow and let me know the result. Andy vaguely remembers a problem with reverse and thinks the FDV is mounted on the Gbox - I thought it was further round and attached to the engine but I haven't had a chance to check today - if it's attached to the Gbox then the mounting points will need to be there - also the mounting points for the HP pump which sits atop the Gbox - so were they present on the Pug box ?

Andy's tame gearbox guy only does gearboxes so he is almost certain to know what's what - I expect there are work-arounds but Andy will need to know what they are. He want's to get the swap done in one day - any more will screw up his bookings and my car will be in the way - not to mention putting further dents in my wallet

it could be the speedo drive is a different ratio Brian,

i fitted a Visa bpx into a pug 104 many years back, drove ot down the local rubbish tip road to test it we were doing about 30-40mph the speedo read 80mph,

both cars ran 13" rims,

if this is the case its easy to swap from the old box, i think three bolts around the O/S driveshaft outlet, pull the housing away, swap the drive and bolt the housing back on

the pimp mount is a removable alloy bracket, and im 99% certain the threaded holes for the FDV are already on the pug box,

Thanks for that info Malcolm.

I would imagine that even if the threaded mounting holes for the FDV aren't there it's almost certainly the same casting ready to be drilled and tapped.

AFAIK the instruments for the 405 and the BX are pretty much a straight swap - so hopefully the speedo drive ratio will be the same -but thanks for the heads up and pointing me in the direction of the fix if it proves not to be.

My speedo is already about 10mph out - the last time I took the binnacle off I didn't push the needle back in the right place  at least I've got the sat-nav to check it with.

If it's any help, i've had it fitted to my Valver while i was looking for a new box for that after the diff let go, hence knowing it's a good box (i never drove the 405, it was DOA).

Should help alay(sp) any concerns ;)

That's made me smile, knowing i'm not the only one who did this. Took me ages to realise why going through speed cameras at 40 didn't trigger them!

I always thought the manin issue here would be the mountings for the HP pump.
On earlier peugeot cars, the vacuum pump is mounted in the same place and is driven in the same way that a HP pump is.
However, on later cars, the vacuum pump is driven directly on the end of the camshaft, so the holes on the gearbox might not be there?

I've always been amazed that for example a citroen part like a cylinder head when you put it right next to a peugeot cylinder head, even though they are both XUD engines, some of the drillings are different. So although it might fit, it might not work!

peugeot boxes dont normally have the holes drilled for the pressure regulator and possibly not the fdv either.

are there not two types of actuation on the be3, push or pull on the clutch?
