Nice work though. How are the throttle bodies on the 16v?
The £40 refers to the price paid for the car, the restoration will be a lot more !

New liners have arrived, will update thread at weekend.

I suggested this for Marks valver once but I couldn't get him that interested; he said it'd make the interior smell of petrol and be very uncomfortable for passengers!

Good bit done this weekend, new liners in, honed, new piston rings gapped, pistons back in, head back on

Yes, I'm using normal 8V liners!! I know of folks running them in boosted motors with no problems.

Here's the old liners

That takes me back to when I rebuilt my red 16v's engine back in 2005.

I hope nobody ever fits the cams with the head on the bench, then picks the head up, face down, and repeatedly puts it down again.

Annyoing tapping from freshly rebuilt engine? Slightly bent inlet valve? Complete muppet for 3 years anyone?

LOL that would be a silly mistake!

Almost like when I was putting my monster MR2 engine back together and realised I'd forgotten to lap the valves in (And the tolerances were wrong to shim out of it) and had to ruin a £300 headgasket!!

Ah I got away with lapping valves, or not doing it as the case was.

Saxo VTR with a VTS engine fitted. 12 bent valves due to snapped cambelt - buy 16 used valves on eBay from a 106 GTi (same car underneath) and fit 12 of them. I was very pressed for time. New seats? No. New guides? No. New seals? No. Lap the valves in? No.

How did it run? Best dyno pull was 134bhp (standard is 120bhp!) so not only is it running well, it's kicking out some power for some reason too!

Sometimes cutting corners is fine

Is the 106 shim under bucket or hydraulic lifter?

3S engine in MR2 is stupid shim under bucket, and I'd new seats in to accomodate the bigger valves and the valve clearances were too far out

Got less done this weekend than I wanted, as I was bloody sick.

Still got a few things sorted - wiring started, throttle bodles on, timing belt on

where i left it last week
Image

manifold on for throttle bodies
Image

had to take the die grinder to the engine mount to allow manifold to fit
Image

throttle bodies bolted on
Image

home made back plate for the air filter, secured with the trumpets
Image

the tbs fully assembled with linkages
Image

starting the wiring loom for the ECU
Image

before the pulleys and timing cover backplate went on
Image

starting to split looms to decipher the wiring, and work the new ECU into it.
Image

timing cover backplate on, pulleys and timing belt. no tension in the belt yet as waiting on getting a tension gauge for the belt tomorrow before I tighten the tensioners up.

No idea, I'll be mapping it on the road only like I normally do so won't have an accurate figure, I'd guess 10 percent or so more?

I'll likely see biggest benefit from the engine rebuild with the new bores and rings.
