Rear Arm

Not sure what I have done wrong.

Swaped a good arm for one thats not so good (as you do). I thought I had every thing correct but I seem to have inherited a slight clunk on what I think is each rotation of the wheel. Any thoughts of what this could be? Visually I can not see anything at the momnet until I can get the wheel off. A task made harder by the car deciding to cough and stall probably due to a bit dirt in the carb and the low fuel level. Not an easy case to drop down to the servo when its 20ks away.

Annoying thing is this clunk!

How do you know you fitted a good arm unless you put the bearing in yourself?

It's not the brake disc shroud fouling on something is it?

Because I took it off the 19TZS that had a good arm :wink:

Define a good arm (i'm not having a go)?? If its been stood a while, the grease in the bearings can settle at the bottom of the lowest point & then the bearings that don't have any grease on them go rusty & then its knackered. The reason i know this is that when Matt changed the rear arms on my tzd, it had been stood quite a while & thats what he noticed when he pulled the old bearings out. One arm looked as thought the bearings were quite new, but they were still v-rusty where there was no grease on them.

Is it deffo a clunk sound rather than a creaking sound (this is more typical of knackered bearings)? When you refitted the rear caliper, was it put back on correctly? If it wasn't, that might explain a clunking sound?

If it's once per revolution of the wheel, that kind of rules out the arm pivot bearing itself (unless the bumps occur once per revolution!) Mark's suggestion of the shroud might be onto something - they can distort due to rust/damage when handling the arm and I've known them foul on balance weights. I'd have described that as more of a scrape than a clunk though.

Wheel nuts tight? ;)

Mulley, Up until last month the donor car in question was a running car only reason its off the road is knackered water pump and couple other engine related things. No rust problems its stored in the garage and low humidity here so rusting not an issue. I can assure you this arm was in good order.

Mat, will check it when get a chance like I just posted no rust problem. You could be onto something if a weight balance on the wheel is knocking the shroud. I thought the job was to damn easy when I took the old one off to replace it with the spare.

Yes wheel nuts were tight but one never knows...lol

Fixed.

It was something snagging a wheel weight as it went around, to be exact a small twig. How it got there dunno.

Reminds me of the time when Shaun was sorting out the rear brakes on a jetta & as he popped the wheel back on, it was very hard to turn & it made a funny rubbing sound. He took the wheel back off, re-inspected the new disc & pads he fitted & couldn't work out what the problem was. Re-fitted the wheel, exact same problem? Ahem, it appears the tyre was rubbing against the car jack, hence the noise & it was difficult to turn the wheel, haha, panic over, phew.....

Given the road sign I saw last week of "Major Road Works ahead" I can take a guess that a twig will be least of my worries for weird sounds as the stone chip is spread on the road. Dickheads flying through because they see no need to be doing 30kph especially those in the Hilux wide wheeled pick up as many stones as my tyres can flick idiots :evil: . Then picking up stones that are going to stick to the underside of the BX and catch in calipers etc. A twig seems a minor thing now but got me going especially with the starting up issue at the same time so could not get under and check until I fixed that.
