Wiring assistance

Post by mark239 »

Hi

On the 16V:

Was just wondering if anyone knew off the top of their head where all the thin black wires go that enter the engine compartment from the passenger side,a few of them go to the alternator, starter solenoid and the oil pressure and level sensors, but I can't work out where the rest of them go, even from looking at the other car, as there seems to be slight differences.

Can't be bothered spending a few hours with a multimeter so thought I'd ask here.

Thanks in advance

Have you looked at the wiring schematics in Haynes? There's a lot of wires emanating from the passenger footwell, fusebox and all. :)

It sounds like your talking about the instrumentation loom, that has two large (8way, white or occasionally brown) connectors just behind the battery. Thing it, they shouldn't be black wires! They should be mostly green with various tracers. Are they clean?

Off the top of my head they go to the following;

Reverse gear switch,
Water Temp switch
Water Temp Gauge
Oil Pressure gauge
oil pressure switch
oil pressure level
alternator excitor
starter

It is indeed that loom.

It seems as if they have been replaced at some point in the past, as they are definitely all black!!

Might as well just replace them all in that case I suppose.

citroen wiring only goes by the coloured tags/indicators were each wire terminates, completely ignore the flex colour

Oh I knew that, that's the way it is in all the other citroens we have, just this one is wired all black with no tags and all identical connectors, guess it's trace back from the connector time!

You dont need the whole plug, just the connectors. Tyco/Amp still do samples but i've never been able to buy a big lot of them.

Or something like this? Not as original, but it'll help prevent corrosion of the copper.

Thats very similar to what i have to go on mine. The whole lot will be replaced just as soon as i can find a supply of the edge connectors that push onto the instrument panel (which isn't going well!)

Right, I got most of them traced today using a continuity tester on one of the other 16V's

I'm left however with 3 wires unaccounted for, does anyone know what they're for?

NB, my descriptions might not be accurate - I'm just going on what the senders look like.

What I have so far is:

3 pin connector

pin1 - ???
pin2 - side water temp sender
pin3- Oil pressure

8 pin connector
---------------

pin1 - starter
pin2 - gearbox
pin3 - gearbox
pin4 - alternator
pin5 - oil level
pin6 - top water temp sender
pin7 - ???
pin8 - ???

I don't know what goes where, but I know you're missing from that list:

oil temp sensor (on the sump pan)
oil pressure sensor (there is a pressure sensor for the gauge as well as the switch for the light - not sure which one you've found so far)
and the oil level sensor - which is screwed onto the back of the block - should have two pins so that could be one of the missing ones, since you only reported one wire for the level sensor.

good luck!
