Personally I think it a bit naughty to put a link up here to ebay items that are already being bid on when you have no vested interest in the items yourself. If nobody has noticed them yes but people were already bidding on 2 of these items. I am not bidding on them BTW but would have been p---ed off if I was.

You've stated this before Kevan !

However theres absolutely NO forum rules which state that 'you can not/should not etc,' post any E-bay item spots which may even have a bid on them,
in-fact its inviting anyone to 'Post a Spot' !
The 'BX SPOTTING' forum wrote: Tell us about BXs you have spotted on the road, or BXs/parts spotted for sale including eBay finds.
So however anyone feels about it, you just have to live with it like everyone else including me !

E-bay/Gumtree/General Adverts/Car shows/Car dealers etc. become part of forum unfortunately and therefore have to accept what is posted up (Exposed) !

Its actually occurred to me several times when I've had E-bay items in my watch list with a very strong interest in purchasing them (some with bids and some with none) then only to see someone has made a spotted post on (i.e. BXC/FCF or XM forums) but I've never posted back into those threads expressing my feelings to the O/P !

And just for the record, its happen again to me only this week on THIS very forum on a 'Live' e-bay item (with bids on the item), when a Forum member posted up the spot/link and with only a few hours remaining too oh JOY !

Unlike the wheel trims which have some days to go and I'm sure someone would have posted them up as everyone doesn't spot items within the hour of an E-bay listing going live (when there's probably going to be Zero bids) ?

As I was hoping to get the /\ item (I was referring to for a lesser price) , however when I came back to bid on the item, the price had more than doubled

Unknown to me, a forum member had 'Exposed' the said item by then (as I'd no time to be looking on here with only 10 minutes to go) so I ended up probably paying three time more for the item if the person had never posted up the spot !

I'm reasonably happy with the item, however it wasn't a small amount and would have been nice to have won the item for a lot less, especially as I'm not earning to receive a wage (or on any state handouts either) so I have to be careful on what I spend my £'s on !

 So would this be the way forward when you have 'an interest' in an E-bay item listing:-

"I've seen THIS item on E-bay so could all the rest of the BXC forum/members please don't bid on it as I'm going to put a bid on it in the dying seconds of the listing so I can get this with the one bid" :?

I think NOT !

'Such is life and unfortunately we have to take on the chin'

:(

PS :- The First set of Wheel trims (GTi/TZD Turbo) are in my 'Watched List'

I must admit Kevan, i don't agree with you, its a forum, anyone can post up anything that they think might be interesting to forum members, what's your reason behind what you've said? I'm not having a go, i'm just interested to hear your side. I was halfway through Rich's post & couldn't be bothered to read the rest

I realise there are no hard and fast rules on this and I'm not suggesting there should be but those who are already bidding on the item are also BX enthusiasts and by all probability are also Forum members. The current bidders have done their homework and searched for the items they want and probably still end up buying the item but end up paying a lot more than they would have if someone with no vested interest hadn't interfered with the transaction. Like I say I'm not suggesting there should be rules on this but feel it is the gentlemanly thing to do to not to list links to items that are already underway. There is also the fact that if a forum member wants to sell his BX items on ebay privately he should be able to and it would be his perogtive as to weather he put a link on here or not.
I also find it a little hipocritical that someone who constantly posts links on here to items other people are bidding on when he doesn't want them feels miffed when he ends up paying more for an item he was bidding on was "exposed" on here by a forum member?

Internet = No Privacy unfortunately.

If a forum member didn't want to advertise their stuff on the forum & would rather sell stuff via e-bay, then they need to shout up, otherwise they'll get posted up. The motive surely by the poster(s) is to usually to make everyone aware (not everyone looks on e-bay daily, so may miss out) of what is available & that further advertising will help the seller (i.e. a club member) get a better price for their item.

I'm sure that some of the items that i've won, i've perhaps paid a bit more than if they were never advertised on here, but selling & buying is a free market & so whilst we may have a view on things, i don't think we can say what is right or wrong imho. I've wanted those items, & don't see that its my right to buy them at the cheapest price, occasionally i've mentioned i'm bidding & have asked that there isn't a bidding war, whether that is even right is open to opinon i guess.

Personally, i think its irrelevant whether the listing has got bids or not. We all comment on cars that are for sale on e-bay which are listed & even mention how much they are going for at any given time, so i'm not sure what the difference is between a part & a car? We'd all end up not posting anything that is for sale which is outside of the forum.

I personally when i advertised my Gti, didn't mention it on the forum as i know we are tight wads on here, & i wanted to acheive the absolute maximium that i could on that car. I'd spent a considerable amount on it & didn't want to sell it for peanuts. I didn't advertise it on e-bay, but a classic car website, now my ad was spotted & posted up with a few comments, mostly positive & i even replied to the posting, it didn't really bother me. My target market wasn't anybody on here & guess what, i sold my car to someone who didn't even know about the club.

I see your last point though, but thats people for you, haha...i personally got slightly irritated when a well known member was just bidding to get a cheap BX quite a few times, & they were glad they got outbid, now that wound me up. I would have been well miffed if members were helping a seller shall we say get a better price by deliberately doing this even if they didn't know the seller. Why bleedin bother??? Again, the reply i got made no sense to me, but did to that individual when they explained why they did this. Personally, if i was to bid on a bx on e-bay, the 1st thing i'd do is pm that individual & tell them not to bid on it unless they actually wanted the car, in which case they could tell me they wanted it & then its a fair fight over who would win the car.

I'm honestly not having a go Kevan, but hope my response kinda makes some sort of sense, even if you disagree. You'll have to pop over for a cuppa sometime :)

This is 'markets' and how they operate . . .

The best you can hope for is that you happen to have a bit more luck/cash/shoving power than the other guy. Personally, I'd rather retain my dignity and go hungry than get crushed in the scramble. I don't see that Richard over stepped the mark though - how would you begin to legislate for what could and couldn't be posted? Surely that has to be left to individual discretion.

In which case I'm with Kevan on the 'gentlemanly' front - you can't have too much 'gentlemanly' and the world needs a good deal more of it (IMHO!).

I fully understand that Matthew, we all have different oppinions and we are all entitled to express them as I did. I didn't for one minute expect anyone to particularly agree with my views, I'm quite used to having differing oppinions to the norm :)

I have been thinking about booking the TZD into Westroen at some point to have my spheres tested one Saturday morning and was going to PM you to see if I should bob over for a BX natter / fidget. Won't be for awhile yet though all my weekends are full now for a while plus I've over spent quite a lot since Christmas and need to address my overdraft before sphere checking. :(

I do like unwritten gentlemans rules and honesty pots etc. they are a wonderful change to the rest of the rat race rules. It is always pleasant to find a nice cafe or coffe shop where they serve you first and only wish payment before you leave. As you say such a rare thing nowadays.

I think my opinion of whether it's 'right' to post up eBay links would depend on whether I'm buying or selling! I'll not bid against someone I know, if they've spoken out and said they're bidding on something - it just doesn't seen very gentlemanly.

Most of the time the links posted here are only of passing interest i.e. "How much did that rare piece of plastic sell for?!" But it has sometimes been useful if I hadn't spotted something yet.

Sometimes I miss bits that I would want to buy, Richard has spotted some bits that I would have missed normally as he searches all different ways (and has more time than I) so I think in this instance its a fair spot. If a forum member DOES express a particular interest in something spotted then its only fair unless you need one desperatly to leave them to it.

I am bidding on the 4 MK1 GT style wheel trims as I would like a set for the GT if I do decide to fit steel wheels again, but on teh other hand eBay is a public auction so if I get outbid then so be it.
