Diesel Starter motor

Post by Discoil »

My wife had decided that the BX should have a new starter on now as the old one was being more hesitant to operate.
Never had another starter motor before .!
23 years old . Not bad eh .
I would rather work on my Discovery these days :)
Battery disconnected , air box and hoses out , clutch lever pivot removed , wires off . Phew.
With the fixing bolts out , I just managed to get the starter out downwards .( very tight on space )
New one just wanted picking up which turned out to be half the size of the old one and the factors were really concerned about this .
So much smaller , so I loaded it in from the top and reassembled all the parts. Lovely job . :D

A lot of new replacement starters use more modern technology for the motors, plus have a gearbox on the end instead of the gear being on the motor shaft - all this equals a lighter, more compact motor that usually needs less power to turn the engine over.

I've heard of some of these motors killing the built in gearbox after a couple of years, but didn't find this when I fitted one on my Skoda years ago.

I had this on the Green Tiger. About six months down the line, the starter packed up. It just didn't seem to have enough grunt for a cold start. Ended up putting ANOTHER starter on it. Was not impressed.
