I will be parting my estate shortly. So if you are interested in any of its innards let me know and we could work something out.

Re: Dollywobbler's TZD estate - Ugh
I'm doing my best to make me like it more. I've just ordered a full set of spheres. The right rear has pretty much no damping at all. Plenty of bounce, no damping. Now I need to work out how to remove them. Wonder if I've got any oil filter removers that'll be up to the task (I have several after doing a group test a while back!).

They'll probably work on the front, but may struggle if the rears have corroded in place. Nothing to lose by giving it a try though!

I can see the rears being a pain. Do you have to depressurise the system or will shoving it on low be ok? Plan is to get it up on ramps for the rears.

Re: Dollywobbler's TZD estate - Ugh
If your'e doing the rears, leave the car pressurised so that you don't twist the strut & snap the hydraulic pipes attached. As soon as you get a bit of movement on the rear sphere, then you must depressurise & then you can continue to undo the sphere. Front spheres should be removed whilst de-pressurised .

Re: Dollywobbler's TZD estate - Ugh
Leave the car on high on ramps while you slacken them off to give more room to work in, then drop it. You'll still have enough room to replace them even on low. If a sphere feels tight all the way to the end of its thread, chances are the membrane has ruptured and there is still pressure in it. So be careful when undoing the last few turns and beware of a faceful of LHM...

Re: Dollywobbler's TZD estate - Ugh
All sounds fun.
Desperate to rekindle my mojo for this car, I set about on a very minor fix today. The rear washer doesn't work. Pulled the bottle out, pulled the pump apart, got the motor spinning again. Dashed a bit of grease on it, reassembled and bingo. Rear washer.
Then decided to have a look at the air filter. It doesn't look that fresh but more worrying is the good soaking in oil it's had. That might explain some of the exhaust smoke. There's clearly a lot of oil coming in via the breather. So, what's causing this? On the 2CV, the breather itself can fail with time. Can you replace it? Or is there a bigger problem somewhere? I took the air filter out completely and went for a quick drive. It was still very smokey. Reading Wooscary's Blog, it seems it had trouble with emissions for the last MOT. I'm not surprised!

Its probably the turbo pissing oil? I've got some brand air filters @ £2.50 each if you want a few, not sure if anyone is going to Wetherby that could ferry them back to you, p&P would make them probably more expensive than you buying one local to you Let me know if you want any?

Re: Dollywobbler's TZD estate - Ugh
Slightly late to the party but the damping is only.governed by the diameter of the hole in the sphere. I had unevenly worn spheres on the estate which caused the ride to be uneven, like the front and back would feel like they were rocking slightly.Dollywobbler wrote:I'm doing my best to make me like it more. It's bloody odd if you hit a bump mid-bend. The dynamics are frankly a bit sick-inducing!

Re: Dollywobbler's TZD estate - Ugh
I can't see how the turbo would affect the air filter. Air goes through the filter first, then the turbo doesn't it? The oil is coming from the breather pipe.MULLEY wrote:Its probably the turbo pissing oil? Thanks for the offer of a filter. As you say, the costs probably don't stack up.

Re: Dollywobbler's TZD estate - Ugh
I have a theory about reduced damping as I've come across this in the past when I had 1 or more spheres losing pressure. I wonder if any of the suspension movement could be transmitted back to the accumulator sphere?

Re: Dollywobbler's TZD estate - Ugh
Did some digging today. Rust ugh!
At least it's ok here. Rear crossmember is generally very good too.
Passenger side is worse, so the extra fuel tank isn't entirely to blame for wing rot - I did remove a huge amount of soil though!
Also gave all cavities a good soaking in wax, and used underseal on the underside.

That rust's not as bad as some I've seen - shouldn't be too big a job, although maybe a bit fiddly to make the repair pieces.

It'll be worse once the paint starts coming off. Already, there's bubbling above that area (just visible). Bloomin' cars.
