Exhaust conumdrum

Post by citsncycles »

So I've been driving Timex round sans back box the last 2 days, and I'm not sure I want to fix it! There's a distinct increase in power since the box fell off Sunday, it's keeping up with traffic and managing to perform much like I remember my first RD doing all those years ago. It also seems to be using less fuel!

While I realise this is probably down to reduced back pressure in the exhaust system, I'm not certain whether this is down to the old box being clogged with soot, or because there's increased back pressure even with a new silencer fitted. If the latter I'm tempted to simply fit a length of pipe out the back. What do you guys think?

If you don't mind the noise then why not? I've removed the box from the white one and personally wouldn't want it to stay like that but if it doesn't bother you it's not a problem!

I went the other way and kept the back box but binned the cross box.

Timex is an n/a D :?:

If it is, it'll share the narrow-bore exhaust like my Athena. When i got mine the back half of the system was knackered so it was replaced with a spare 17TD i had in stock, from the frontpipe back. The resultant increase in power and drivability round town was significant!

So i imagine by increasing flow, the improvement on a diesel would be much more noticeable.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

I replaced A 19rd exhaust with a td one years ago and it ran much better. I'm going to fit a td one to my txd when i've finished my tzd project.

Sounds like the standard system is a bit restrictive then - I assume the same system as the petrols was used on the 19D's for cost purposes, but was found just too restrictive on the TD's.

Due to budget considerations I'll hold off replacing the whole system until I have to, but will look at other options for the current repair.

Diesels always benefit from a free-flow exhaust. They don't need back pressure in the same way that a petrol does.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't weld the TD box (which you have) onto the existing cross box, assuming that is in reasonable condition. You'd have a one piece section but that shouldn't cause any problems when putting it on the car. You'd have to tack it together while in position though, to get the alignment right.

If the rear box was on the point of falling off from rust, then it's probably that it was also collapsed internally, which would cause a physical restriction which would then get worse as it clogged up with soot. So a new box might not reduce your newly-found performance noticeably.

I wouldn't mind betting I might be able to scrounge some suitable clamps from my mate John - the pipe looks about the same diameter to H van down pipe, which uses similar joints!
