Leaks???

Post by James Lee »

Hi, many thanks for your hi's, welcomes & advice via gallery :) A bx wouldn't be the same without any of it's teething problems - i guess  :)

Since, i have discovered two leaks on the drive......

1: An lhm leak at the rear, near-side . I'm no mechanic as mentioned before but after inspecting, it seems to be from one of the two thin pipes that push into a rubber boot looking thing almost attached to the rear sphere. The pipe that may possibly be the culprit even pulls right out?? I have pushed it in as far as i possibly can, should these pull out or be part of the rubber boot? I even managed to pull the pipe right out with the car running on the highest level setting (should/will this clamp), i guess it would of sprayed everywhere should the pipe of come loose whilst at the same time i decided to lower the bx right to the lowest?? The rubber boot looks new (must of been replaced just before the bx going into storage in 2005 along with the two front spheres as they are marked 2005)? The other side seems fine but older?

And 2: A slow oil leak which i seems to be the rocker cover gasket (practically just right below the left end glow plug). Im i right?? How many labour hours would this take to replace, was also going to get the garage to replace the glow plugs (which i do have as the two right hand side ones appear old compared to the other two). Thought it would make sense for the two jobs to be done together.

Fingers crossed - everything seems okay.

As a complete novice..... all advice and help will be much appreciated. Thanks, james.

Oil leak sounds pretty normal. Glow plugs can be done yourself, but you need some creativity. Access isn't always ideal.

Not sure about the rear leak but I'm sure someone will advise.

Just realised there's a similar lhm leak issue that has already been posted. It's that exact boot! the black thin pipe into the boot was relevantly loose where the clear one seems tightly fitted. if i'm right in ref to other post, is there another pipe i need to check above the boot? i,ve been quoted £45.00 for the rocker gasket and glow plugs to be replaced (myself supplying the parts)...seems a fair price to me?

Would this be the correct gasket i'm looking for?

more than likely a return pipe leaking, it has no pressure in it so wont pump out at any rate, fairly common problem the rubber pipes perish over time, check inside the boot that is isnt the hydraulic ram thats leaking, rocker cover gasket easy to d.i.y, you will need to remove the intercooler housing if it is a turbo diesel, are your glow plugs faulty? one of them can be a bit tricky to get at as it sits behind the fuel pump lines, but if the car starts and runs ok then leave them as is.

the bx did puff out white smoke on cold start up (when colder a few weeks ago) and ran a bit iffy until warmed up. But since weather has warmed up it seems better now (depending on morning temp). two of four plugs (right two) look older in appearance so may be duff? and obviously harder to access, hence a chance they may of not been changed?

If you had 2 glowplugs that were out, it would be an absolute bitch to start, especially when cold. At worst you may have one thats out, just test each one, no point in replacing stuff that doesn't need replacing.

yeah looks about right, if u diy the job there are hidden allen head bolts at the back of the intercooler (under the rubber surround) u will need to remove. also check the insides of the intercooler for oily deposits whilst its off, this will also allow you more space to check over other bits intercooler hoses, turbo etc.

Whilst the intercooler is off, i'd give it a damn good clean, don't use a pressure washer incase it damages the fins, i used a hosepipe so the pressure was a lot less & i used some oil deposit remover stuff as well to get all the crud out of it. This will help it become more efficient again which in turn helps with performance etc....Make sure its totally dry inside before re-fitting.

If it's the bellows on the cylinder, I got one for mine from the local dealer last year - from memory it was about a tenner.
