Ebay bad seller experience BX exhaust

Post by BX Bandit »

Brand new exhaust

See the photos and judge for yourself. Note his little message at the top of the description. That member who bought the exhaust was me. He has exaggerated my statements: 'Bent, Twisted and Smothered in paste' - is not what I said. I also remained polite and patient while he got irritated and sarcastic and tried to dictate how and when I must return the exhaust.

Originally, there were two of these exhaust items for sale. I bought one. Alas, it had already been fitted. It did have exhaust paste, it had been fitted (the trade mark zig zag scratch marks inside the sliding joint), the flange joint had scratch marks on it where it had been cleaned up, a piece of wire wool fell out of the exhaust and both ends were dented (although this may of happened during transit).
I simply stated that it had been previously fitted (although no signs of soot were found) and asked for a partial refund to reflect this.

Exhaust paste in a 'peculiar' ring pattern just where a clamp would go.

Plenty of clean up scratches on the flange (many more than visible by photo)

By contrast, another BX flange on a back box that was new and unfitted.

The seller was adamant it had not been fitted, would not consider a partial refund. He could of sold his old stock for £14. Instead, it cost him £14 both ways in courier and lost the £14 in the sale! The seller said he would bin the one I returned. Well, if it's not been fitted and is indeed brand new, why bin it? He now only has one for sale, which may well be an unused and unfitted exhaust, but his attitude about the one he sent me was awful. BUYER BEWARE.

I'll be glad of your opinions as to whether this has been previously fitted.

BTW, I was happy to straighten the flanges and fit to my BX if he had conceded that it had been fitted and give me a £5 refund, Glad to say I am fully refunded but I absolutely hate deceipt and dishonesty.

If the seller is going to tell porkies on ebay in trying to sell a 2nd hand item as new then he deserves the grief you gave him.
Looks like a fitted item to me.

It may well be that the one he is now selling is ok, but I won't be doing with people like that, it's clearly been fitted.
Anyway, I did leave -ve feedback Tim, but he's obviously had a strop and had a go via his description.

Mike, if you are looking to replace the rear box on Timex with a standard NA part I bought one from this guy. It was £35 plus delivery, but I got him to throw in a new clamp for that. The best I bought get locally was £54 + VAT.

I had a good long chat on the phone to him (he's also called Neil!) about Citroens which was quite nice - he was very interested in my 1.9 TD conversion.

Thanks Mat - I have a pair of TD silencers ready for Timex now, so just need the bit between the front pipe and the cross box to fit the system.

TD ones are a different size aren't they?

Larger diameter pipes, and different joints on the silencers - NA and most petrol ones are conventional push fit, while TD and GTi models have the joint pictured at the start of the thread. The TD cross box is also slightly shorter, with the one hanger on the pipe going into the box, as opposed to both hangars being on the box.

I'm happy to be corrected, but believe the down pipe / front sections are the same, with the change happening roughly at the rear footwell area - I'll find out as I go on collecting the parts.

Just out of interest Mike, why are you putting TD silencers on an NA diesel?

I know matey, but he refuses to accept it. Earlier on I asked him to remove his comments about the buyer (i.e. me) in his description and he replied calling me a waste of space and time. This time it's personal grrrr

What I should of said was that Space and Time are in fact one continuum, thus rendering his reply rather stupid, but I kept my nose clean and called him unprofessional instead.

The problem is, ebay has only these drop down menus to choose the nature of your complaint, meaning it's impossible to actually describe the problem in any real context.

It has quite obviously been fitted but never actually used but from this picture it looks like it is genuine O/E spec with nice thick steel which is far far better than the usual aftermarket paper thin things that don't last. Personally I think I would have bit the bullet and kept it.

Just out of interest Mike, why are you putting TD silencers on an NA diesel?
This is after discussion on here after I lost the back box on the way back from the X Rally, with a resulting inprovement in performance. I was wondering about just putting a straight tailpipe in because of the performance improvement, and the outcome of the following discussion was:

A - Diesels don't need back pressure in the exhaust system, so you want the least possible obstruction both in terms of what noise you can put up with and what you can get away with legally.

B - TD systems have less back pressure built into them then NA ones, and other members had used them on NA cars to good effect.
