Diesel start question

Post by kiwi »

How many seconds should the relay take to click to enable the car to start after the light has gone out? Car starts fine as long as that relay has clicked.

Now if this is a fault is it the glowplugs or the relay?

about 15 sec on my tzd, but if your glo plugs are good it should fire up sooner, i have a push button glo heater on tgd usually 10 secs of heat does the trick maybe a little longer on cold frosty mornings.

how does this button work? as i think my bx has one fitted. I have a pull/push switch fitted (thinking it may of been something to do with an bypass radiator switch). But when i pull it out (with engine off) i hear a 'glow plug relay' like sound/click? do you think it could be this?

The original preglow relay closes for ~15 sec. when ignition is turned on, and also permanently as long as you crank the engine. When you stop cranking, it opens, regardless of the timer.

If you notice a voltage drop while you pull your switch (lights dim after the click), it is likely that you turned on the glowplugs as they draw up to 70-80 amps initially. To be sure, put a probe lamp or a multimeter between one of the glowplugs and ground, to see if there is voltage on the plugs when it 'clicks'!

It was already fitted when i got the car, but I guess the relay unit has been disconnected, and the push button is wired direct to the battery.
