Rear arm bearing seal

Post by mat_fenwick »

The white BX needs a rear arm bearing doing, which I'd forgotten about until I replaced the tyres with slightly wider ones and found one side is now fouling the inner wing. A full kit is around £45 delivered, and I've got several arm's worth of bits spare so I was thinking of just replacing the bearings and seals. Bearings are around £7 each (Timken JL22349F) but I've not been able to get a definite part number for the seal.

Anybody know what it is, or have got one in a kit they can either measure or ideally give me the part number? GSF want £4 a seal which seems a bit steep.

Slightly off topic, but what do you get in the rebuild kit? I need to do both sides of the 16v... does one need special tools, like bearing presses and so on?

i had the skf kits a while back and IIRC they had everything you need apart from the shims that are dealer only but only large metal washers really - mine didn't need shimming... xantia kit here, which I think is the same...

I just knocked the old bearings out with a long hammer through flat head screwdriver and used as much waterproof grease as i could get in... a much, much easier job than I thought it would be - quite enjoyed it really!

Got my hopes up there, when I saw the reply...
There's a guide in the Tech FAQ ;)

EDIT - I did list the parts in the kit, but was beaten to it!

I remember getting some from cafco a while back listed as c15van seals but about £4 each as matt says, you should get everything you need in the kit, pins , nuts, seals, bearings, tube, think some even come with a pack of grease, easily available from a decent motor factors, bx,c15,xantia all the same i beleive.

Dude, you is tighter than me! For £4 you may as well buy one, although that is a bottle of (cheap) red, half a night in for you ;-)

 I probably will, but just thought if I could match up what the seal is I could get it when I get the bearings and save a bit of cash...I've already spent more than I expect to get back when I sell it!

Nah, people in general are more concerned with mileage than condition, and seeing as it's done over 100k miles I don't expect more than £4-500 if I'm lucky. The thing that caught me out was that the seller said it had just failed the MOT so I bargained on just fixing the bits on the failure sheet. Not realising it had stood for 3 years since the MOT and all the tyres were shot (but fine on the outer walls...)

TBH, with all the work that you've done on that car it should go for a lot more than £500, don't give it away as the new owner won't bother looking after a cheap BX, a more expensive one will get you hopefully a enthusiast who will look after the car. The number of cheap BX's sold over the last few years only for them to re-surface in awful condition or being scrapped is stupid. I reckon it's got to be worth a minimum of £750, thats still damn cheap for a diesel car that can do 50mpg :)

..that_

It may not fetch the price of a half decent TD, but diesel estates in any form are generally sought after, and you should get more than £500 with a new MOT.
