Engine Swap

Post by Modstox257 »

Could anybody advise me on what possible engines i could put in my BX its a 1992 BX 1.9D TGD and i want to turbo it and if turbo'd the current engine i think it would blow it to peices :P so yeah obviously theres swapping it for a TD BX engine but i cant seem to find one as they are hard to get now ? possibly ? so is there any other engine which would be an easy fit and would fit on my 5 speed gearbox ?

Thanks Andy c:

Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel engines are more common than the 1769cc Bx specific Turbo diesel unit.

A Xantia engine isnt a straight swop but easier than a 306 unit etc, you may struggle to insure it once its been "modified" with you being sucha young driver....

i think pretty much any cit/pug TU type petrol engine will fit, with a little jiggery, but the electrics could prove a headache, and also running the h/d pump can cause issues as diesels run on the camshaft. there are plenty of options if you have the knowledge. why not a zx volcane engine?? there was a complete t/d eng/box low miles with fdv/pump etc on ebay £400 a while back in cornwall i think, dont know any more than that. it will more than likely cause insurance issues as they dont like "modifications" moreso engine swaps.

Mat's done this swap I think, so can expand on this, but there are at least a couple of different routes to take dropping a Xantia engine into a BX. If you want to keep the original hydraulics you will need to fit a BX camshaft, as the Xantia pump is driven from the crank pulley (I think) like the petrol cars. Alternatively, you could modify the hydraulics to run from the Xantia pump - this will give you a higher volume pump, but it will involve some replumbing. I think Mat used the BX intercooler set up, but whether that was personal preference or because the Xantia one doesn't fit I don't know.

If you're really brave you can fit the 12 valve 2.1 unit, but it's a very tight fit - I looked a building a hybrid non turbo 2.1 and decided against it in the end (for now at least) because it would make it more difficult to work on.

I believe there are some eastern european guys who managed to shoehorn a xantia v6 eng/box into a bx estate, but proved to be bigger job than expected, im sure i see some pics somewhere on the net, i would expect it to be very front end heavy tho, but great fun none the less. Now there's an idea for the currently redundant tgd....?

I came across a Dutch forum where someone was doing that to a BX estate. I don't think he's finished yet, but he was having to do some major engineering work to get it in, although how much of that was down to his not wanting to alter the shell due to the regulations over there I don't know. Among the modifications was rebuilding the front subframe with the cross member positioned a couple of inches further back in order to clear the gearbox, and I still couldn't see where he'd find room in front of the engine for a big enough rad!

as you said, probably great in a straight line, but I wouldn't want to try any fast cornering in it.

yes a fine engine indeed, i was lucky enough to own a v6 xantia auto about 4 yrs ago R345SCS,fantastic car to drive, but very high maintenance costs, i recall the exhaust system costing £400, and a coil pack (1 side only, comes as a single block for 3 cylinders) which i seem to remember getting from a RENAULT dealer was £220 but cheaper than citroen who wanted ridiculous money £500 ish. A superb car in every way and made a lovely noise, had a bit of a thirst tho, as far as i know it is still on the road today some where in the midlands.
