first though would be the condition of the spindle bush's, is there excessive play/movement when you lift the wiper arm away from the screen,

All of the electrical connections under the air intake grille -wiper, washer motors, heater fan(s) - get pretty damp - they're almost totally exposed to all the wet weather and they corrode. My wiper almost came to a stand in heavy snow a few years ago and at the time (on my way to work) the solution was to grab the 4mm connectors and wiggle them in and out furiously thus giving them a clean on the points that actually make contact.

Longer term (and when it's stopped raining) disconnect and squeeze the crimp terminals very slightly so they make better contact and cover in vaseline before re-connecting (though I can't remember doing any more to mine after my furious wiggle exercise  ).

Might ask in this topic

One the BXs has been parked up for a couple years in the garden intended never to drive again. Well its now back on the road with no intermediate setting. Tried the replacemwnt of the switch inside not sure where the problem is from there. Any thoughts.
