Heavy steering - possible causes?

Post by KevR »

I've noticed the steering getting a bit heavier on the grey one lately. Almost feels as if it's got a notch in it at the centre point. I'l check all the ball joints etc when I get a minute, but wondered whether this could be the power steering pinion getting a bit gunged up? I've tried lots of lock to lock moves at the same time as working the suspension up and down in an effort to flush the LHM through, but makes no difference. Maybe it's time for some Hydraflush...>?

I assume it has PAS fitted? Is it just the centre point that feels notchy? Timex can do this at almost any position, I think because of a tired pressure regulator. It sometimes runs the pressure a bit low, and the steering is the first to suffer. It also gets worse when it's cold.

That makes sense - yes it's PAS, never had a BX without it! And I've noticed that it's worse if I steer while I'm braking (for instance turning into my drive) so that could well point to a lack of pressure. It's always been a bit slow to rise as well. I've got a spare regulator somewhere, will pull it out. and have a look.

deffo pressure issues then. Ian had already ruled out Accumulator and pump on Timex when he had it, but it may be worth checking those on yours, depending on tick time.

Accumulator's pretty new, and I changed the HP pump a while back for a known good one. Tick time is nice and long, so looking increasingly like a regulator problem.
