pin stripe removal

Post by rutter123 »

which is the best way to remove the pin stripes on my ven red tzd? there are lots of bits missing along all panels and i think the car would benefit from full removal, it only seems to come off in tiny pieces. without damaging the paintwork anymore.

Park it in the sun to soften them up a bit. A credit card might help scrape them off, then a tack wipe to try and remove any residue.

It might be that the VE red is clear lacquered above the base red paint, a bit like a metallic. If this is the case you can strip it off fine. Of course it is open to you to replace the 2K clear lacquer.... or not.
My own preference would be to ascertain the coating process whilst removing said strips and probably re blow some 2K clear on it and Superfine then G3 polish it back down.
BTW clear laquer over solid colours is incredibly common to help give the perception of depth to prospective customers. With metallics it is completly compulsory to attain the depth of field so the metallic elements reflect correctly. Pretty much the same for pearlecents.

If you run a hair dryer over the stripes it'll soften the glue enough to just peel off quite easily. Ian's 'sun' would work, but not as easy to come by as a hair dryer!

I used a wall paper steamer to soften the glue on my meteor stripes and tar and glue remover to take off any glue residue .
This what was left after using the steamer

The trick is not to leave the steamer in one place for too long .

I used a pin stripe removal wheel last time I did it as used by bodyshops.

electric hot air paint stripper is good, but only have it on No. 1 setting and dont keep it stiil for very long at all,

peel the stripe as you go,
then wash the remaining glue off with petrol
