Plastic bag thingy

Post by Pogo »

My GTI has a elasticated plastic bag around the dizzy cap and HT leads, with a split in it.
I think it's original as I had a Peugeot a few years ago with one too.
Do they make a difference or can I safely chuck it away?, if not what's the best thing to do and what do other people do?

Its to keep the water/moisture etc away from the eleccy bits, if it were me I would try and repair the split as its useful, most have fell off by now.

We used to take them off years ago in the dealers, we found they kept condensation in.

i seem to remember something similar on my 309 years ago, i told my nosey neighbour it improved fuel consumption, he then asked where he could get one for his vauxhall astra.

Yes, it was a 309 I had with one on.
I can't really see how it does much, especially with the split in, anyway other cars don't have them and the distributor is at the back if the engine anyway.

My MK2 astra didn't have one on when I first got it - I drove through a flood one day and the engine died (wet inside dizzy cap), I then found one of these on a scrapper and fitted it, engine never died whilst driving through subsequent floods :D

if your car has the coolant header tank the plastic cover will stop water going over the cap, either from spillage, or the coolant pushing past the cap,

can you just rotate the plastic cover so the split is downwards

Brand new original on Ebay if you end up looking a replacement.
