Seat dismantling

Post by mat_fenwick »

I'm trying to remove the foam from the driver's seat frame, so I can get a couple of new pieces of leather sewn in. But I'm struggling to remove the plastic trim from the rear of the seat. The 4 screws are out, and all that seems to be holding it is the headrest support tube. Any clues on how to get it off? It feels like it will break rather than pull upwards.

It will break. The plastic trim is really feeble. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer, but I'm sure someone else will.

I was sure someone would know the answer, but I'm hoping to take the dismantled parts with me tomorrow so I can drop them off on the way to Scotland, and pick them up on my return. Hopefully it'll be clearer tonight, in what passes for daylight round this area.

See if you can pull down the squab at the top by the head rest. I've had a set apart before now and don't remember problems. It may need the insert that surrounds the head rest aperture to be removed first.

It does stay light for longer here than down south, but more often than not it's a murky grey drizzly kind of twilight...

Cheers Neil, I was on the phone to Vanny earlier and he talked me through it - you have to push the bottom of the headrest tube towards the back of the seat to disengage a tab, at the same time as pulling it upwards.

And here's why I'm trying to strip it down:

The place that will do the repair (same one that re-covered the van seats) quoted £20 a panel, if I stripped the seat down first. Hopefully they will do an equally good job on these seats but I'll post up some after photos.

How much to leatherise a couple of valver seats?

You know that the side panels are plastic right? ie the one with the big ole in on your picture. Never really understood why they didnt just make them all out of leather (cost?)

I dunno, but will ask. They'd just finished trimming a Mk2 Cavalier in red leather (Billy?) and cost for that was around a grand...

Yeah, I knew about the plastic - the plan is to replace with leather as that seems to be holding up better than the plastic after 20 odd years.

I could draw attention to you and odd and years and make some sort of comparison. But I wont.

That's low. Anyone would look a bit careworn after being sat on for twenty-odd years.

You sure it's not wine vapours dissolving the seat Matt?

Quite sure. I would never let any trace of wine go to waste by getting anywhere near the seat...

Unfortunately after a proper look at the seat he wasn't able to replace the panel without separating the leather from the foam to which it was bonded :( Which would be a couple of hundred quid in labour, so out of the question at the moment.
