Do you live near Ely

Post by Thread Bear »

If you do live near Ely my bud Martin, a long time Citroen nut, who is currently spending a sentence of CX n/a diesel Estate driving for buying without looking, has opened the Liberty Belle Micropub. He has invited me to go down and inaugurate the Sunday Rant, which once sorted here I must do. However he would be greatly interested in having LHM talk at the bar should the locals pop in. Mention Al Bum and you might get a cheap sherbet. Half the furnishings of the pub are mine, its an eclectic mix of junk reflecting the good Docs eccentricity.
He also owns the Liberty Belle boat trips run off the Ely hard but that's another story.

Is the Liberty Belle boat one of the old Edwardian steam launches? I used to live in Ely and there often used to be several steam launches down by the Cutter pub on the waterfront on a sunday lunch.

Sadly its not a steamer. It is one of a pair of bespoke small, 12 persons, commercial tourist boats made for the Fens in a traditional style. I was trying to persuade Doc to invest in a steamer and put the micro pub afloat. Lower overhead and max flexibility but he has gone down this route as the set up costs were lower, despite my willingness to take a share in the vessel so I could play Pugwash occasionally (more like The Vital Spark actually). We got near to buying the Ellesmere passenger boat, St Katherine?, and another laid up craft, but the asking price was to much for Doc and then the owner managed to get sorted and I believe it is out working again. The other kept going up in price as our bids raised, so stuff them. He also owns the trad style narrowboat Vermuyden with a fully functioning hydraulic bubblecar deck. The problem now is he has two businesses and no time to play with his rather nice toy collection. Been there, done that, however you have to work hard to be lazy.
