Clutch or Clutch Cable wear?

Post by hvanman »

Hi, another potential challenge on the TZD...

I have noticed my clutch pedal is VERY high, it is way above the brake pedal and nearly fowling the trim panel.

In use it works fine, with no slip, I'm used to it, but maybe it is a little harsh.

Could this just be tired clutch cable, or is it more likely the clutch itself is worn and needs changing :(

My car has the clutch cable/arm that does not have the push rod adjustment and the threaded section on the engine end of the cable looks to be done up a long way along it's thread...

Thanks, Simon.

you van try to slacken the cable off at the gearbox end this is accessed by either removing the big rubber airhose on the airbox or alternately from underneath, i find this easier with the car on ramps, on the end of the clutch cable are 2 nuts 1 10mm 1 13mm these are locked together undo the 10mm nut whilst holding the 13mm with another spanner the unwind them a few turns and try your pedal again and so on til the clutch feels right, ensure nuts are locked back up again. of course it could be new clutch time, clutch history?

My clutch seemed a bit high after replacing it on 1.6 petrol. However I had put the lever arm under slight tension to ensure the floating pin stayed in place. The diesel's don't have the floating pin I believe but the correct position for the actuating arm/lever from gearbox is with slight play. This should give a better pedal position. I have adjusted mine (as rutter says) to give slight slack on the lever arm and it is much more natural and closer to the brake pedal height. If you do have a floating pin do not put too much slack in the system as they can fall out with no clutch actuating as a result. The guys at PTS Developments remarked on the setting but said it was not very far out from spot on (when I had it under tension) and they confirmed slight slack on lever.
I did not replace the cable but dropped some teflon lube down the cable after ensuring the inner was moving freely. I had a cable break once in the middle of Moorgate (London) but it had that slight stiffness you get when it is not running free or destranding just prior to going. You can feel that with your foot.

Thanks for the advice, I had not realised that slackening the cable would lower the pedal height, I assumed it would raise it even further, so will give that a go on friday, as the nuts are right up the thread a long way.....

Sadly no history of the clutch from the PO, so no idea when it was done. The car has over 173k on it now and I've added around 30k of that I think....

I was told that as the clutch wears the pedal gets higher and higher.
I suspect its on its way out.

The clutch pedal should be approx 1 inch higher than the brake pedal

Try adjusting it first, also whilst its not slipping I wouldnt worry, if the originals lasted that long you wont ever have to do it again!

Fingers crossed then that I can get the nuts apart and once adjusted the clutch still operates OK... Thanks for the advice and feedback from all.
