TZD - Turbo (induction) noise

Post by Stinkwheel »

Hello Forumers,

Right, im sure most of you know ive taken on Dollywobblers 308,000 mile TZD estate.

He reported some performance issues and an extra noise. I can confirm these.
The performance isnt 'that' much lacking, but the noise it makes is quite unusual. Its got a reasonably loud but not over loud turbo whistle................but what it does before coming on boost properly is almosy 'gurgles' or 'sputters' before getting down to it.

The oil leak is not nearly as bad as id feared, no drips on floor overnight, i believe it is just coming from the rocker cover gasket.

Anyone have any initial ideas from the noises description before i get deeper?

Boost leak is the obvious thing that springs to mind, but I wonder whether oil in the trunking around a suspect join could cause a gurgle/splutter. If that's the cause though, it must only be minor otherwise performance drop-off would be significant.

I'd be checking the induction hose to the turbo on the atmospheric side of it

It's an odd sort of rasping noise, first reported by Citro-Geoff about three years ago, when he still had the car. Definitely some sort of minor boost leak. Have you seen how much soot it boots out when you're enjoying yourself? ;)

urrr, yes, and so have the people who dissapear behind it :) :)

But seriously there is very little wrong performance wise, just a wee bit down, so it really cant be that serious an issue (i dont think anyway) just a nightmare to get too (ref cramped engine bay)

Aye - it's not too bad. There's a very steep hill around here that the TXD would comfortably (with a run up) pull its way up in fifth. The TZD just wouldn't.

I have had turbochargers that were positively raucous, like going down the road in Knight rider :) but none of them failed, interestingly last year SWMBO drove our Xantia into a couple of feet of floodwater, until it stopped
Naturally after I had finished complimenting her I towed it home and set to, the cylinders were full of water as was all of the inlet trunking and the intercooler, once drained out the engine started first go and actually ran a little better than before which I put down to the water washing the oily guk out of the intercooler, my favourite for boost leaks on the TZD has to be the rubber seal between the intercooler and inlet manifold, also try removing the top engine mount and pull the motor forward to check the inlet manifold is secure and the turbo trunking is intact.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

Yes the intercooler rubber has given me a fail once. Found on taking it off to give the matrix a darned good clean out. I did that anyway but the gasket was the real fault. Greatly improved pick up.

I steamcleaned the intercooler on the green hornet when I got it and found that went better afterwards so I would check to see how clogged it is, it wont helps with the noise but may help pick up.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for all the sharing of ideas here.

I did have the intercooler off to just 'have a look' as it were.
The thing was nice and clear and the gasket/seal was intact and doing its job. Further investigation required still.
(although i did manage to do a few other little jobs - between welding the 16Txi)
