Rear Windscreen Wiper

Here's a thought which may upset the purists amongst you but will likely appeal to the more thrifty.

I have never been totally satisfied with the wipe of the rear wiper as it is used so infrequently that starting from a clean wipe is nigh on impossible and it needs a few wipes before it wipes clean.

I sceptically tried some 18" wipers (20" not available) from the Pound Shop and found they performed as acceptably on this rear window as the regular brands. What's more, they come in a pack of two so for 50p per wiper you can afford to change it more regularly if you wish. The missing 2 inches is also unnoticeable as the top of the wipe cannot be seen in the rear view mirror anyway and the lower bit is beneath the spoiler.

For the front, I will continue to use 20" Valeo but at the moment I can't think of a reason not to use these cheap wipers on the back

I've used 16" blades on the rear (to use up some old AX stock) and while it looked funny on the car, it didn't seem to reduce the use able swept region any.

Only obvious problem might be that the short blade couldn't clear the high level brake light on the few cars that have them.

To be honest given how rarely the rear wipers are used does make sense to put on what evers cheapest. My own approach is than when I put a new one on the front the old one goes on the back.

There is a theory that if you drive fast enough you do not need to know what is behind you!

I find that even on the estates the rear window stays clear in most conditions on the move - the hatchbacks are brilliant at this!
