Reversing Lights (Automatic)

Post by Tim Leech »

No reversing lights on the TZi, bulbs are fine, connectors on lamps also are fine!

Any ideas? As its an auto is there a reverse switch the same a manual?

I think you will find that it's a compound switch on the autobox that also acts as the starter inhibitor.

it is a combined switch on an auto does both, rev lamps and gearbox lock out, it is located on the front top of gearbox with a 4 way plug connector, which can get full of crap and cause this prob, i recall cutting the connector off and using 6mm blade terminals in place of.

We have the same problem with our Auto Tim. Previous owner installed a manual switch on the dash to operate this. But its disconnected now because apparently reversing lights not required for the WOF! Crazy interpretation of the road fitness rules.

Might go and see if rutter123 suggestion makes any differnce. Worth a look.

Good info and saves a question as Miguel is now refusing to start as if either the gear switch is not working or an immobilizers become active. Remains of an alarm fitted, no keys. Could be fun.

The contacts in the switch will be completely separate, so it is very unlikely both would give problems at the same time. So the fact it still starts OK doesn't mean the combined switch unit is fine, just part of it...

OK Mat, the cars at work today having a MOT, reverse lights arent part of the test but I would like them to work of course, I imagine its just a bad connection, just need to locate the switch and clean it up.

Dear Tim,
Firstly, sorry to hear about your problem Tim
Secondly, I will have a shufty at mine tommorow Tim, and see if I can locate where the reverse light switch is fitted Tim  : My only problem with that is that she still has no coolant ( as I still have the heater tap not refitted as yet  ) so I can,t start her up to put her into high and have a nosey underneath the car to find the reverse light switch.
Weather permitting obviously, I will let you know Tim  :D

The other possibility I've experienced is the 7 way multi connector above the gearbox, at least on manual cars. I've had poor connections on this give problems - notably on the reversing lights. It stumped me for a moment when fault finding, as the meter showed 12 V present at the rear light clusters but no lights...the voltage dropped to around 4 V when the bulbs were plugged in!

worth checking the shim washer on the switch too. It has to be set to the correct depth. If it's has a replacement switch at some point i doubt anyone bothered to set it properly.
