exhaust rear box for a t/d
searching the net for rear box t/d hatch, seems a lot listed but confusing, would i be right in assuming there are basically 2 back boxes, flange and clamp type, and obviously length difference for hatch/estate, no one really lists a t/d rear box only listed as a 1.8 diesel, is this the same part to fit a t/d? a link would be good if anyone knows of the correct backbox to fit a 90 tzd turbo hatch. many thanx.

Re: exhaust rear box for a t/d
Indeed, TD and non turbo ARE different as the n/a are a smaller bore, a 1.9 TZi/GTi or 16v rear box will also fit your car.
have you tried Ebay?

This very subject, has been recently discussed in THIS threadrutter123 wrote:searching the net for rear box t/d hatch, seems a lot listed but confusing, would i be right in assuming there are basically 2 back boxes, flange and clamp type, and obviously length difference for hatch/estate, no one really lists a t/d rear box only listed as a 1.8 diesel, is this the same part to fit a t/d? a link would be good if anyone knows of the correct backbox to fit a 90 tzd turbo hatch. many thanx.

Re: exhaust rear box for a t/d
more confusion, have looked at more listings for rear box and td/gti listings use a flange type fitting, mine has regular clamp fittings,is this the norm for a t/d?

They do use clamp to hold the two parts of the exhaust together, can you load a picture up?

Both the inlet and outlet on the crossbox should be flanged, while the joint between the front and intermediate pipes is a standard push in.

Re: exhaust rear box for a t/d
not flanged defo normal clamp type on the in/out of the mid box, according to s/h the full system was last replaced in 2004 with a bosal backbox and mid box, i have decided to change the whole system as its all pretty knackered and available from germany @ £66 + p/p.
have had a look under the gti and that has flange fittings but is a walker system, tho the same diameter pipework, i guess its all a bit mix/match and wotever they had on the shelf at the time. also appears my n/a tgd has the same bosal system as the tzdt fitted, where as the n/a diesels should have the smaller diameter pipework? the plot thickens.

Re: exhaust rear box for a t/d
Not sure whether the TD front pipe would fit the NA manifold - I welded the NA front pipe to the TD centre pipe on mine!
It could be that they didn't necessarily use the factory standard joints on your particular system - I've come across that before when a complete system has been fitted.
