Xantia front struts

Post by KevR »

I know rear Xantia rams cvan be adapted to fit a BX, but what about front struts? I ask as I've got the chance to buy a brand new Xantia one....

Anyone know for sure one way or the other?

Hi Kev,
A simple answer (IMO) is no, as I'd guess that without some major engineering and a machining facility, the Xantia ones would not just bolt into place without a load of grief for some of the following reasons :-

a) The BX strut top mountings are completely different, so I'm sure that would be a major issue for starters Piston/ram threaded end (length/sizes of journal/taper mounting end) etc. ?
Xantias also have two sizes of Hydraulic feed-pipes 3.5mm dia. (non hydro-active) and 10mm dia. (Hydro-active) !

b) I doubt that the hub mounting end of the struts are of the same dia. and if so, will not be compatible and machining out of the hub or a metal sleeve could be required (metal on/off) ?

c) The actual overall strut end to end (extended/compressed) lengths may be completely different and also the working length (Stroke) of the internal Hydraulic ram too which could also be an issue ?

d) The BX has two rubber return pipes from the strut (Return/vent) which connect to the inner wing, the Xantia has only one (Return) !

Those are just a few of the issues you you need to technically check out for starters, so IMHO it would be easier to just use the normal BX struts !

I agree, but you can't get new BX ones, and there still a few new Xantia ones available (the noe I'm looking at is just 90 euros as well...), so I thought it was worth considering! I do have a lathe and various other useful bits of machinery for adapting stuff, as well as access to people much cleverer than me to help. Might be worth acquiring a used one and giving it a staring at at some point.

Kev, I guess for you it's like bodywork is for me - with the equipmant and skills you have access to it may be worth at least trying to make it fit, while for the majority of us it's not really an option

at least the strut/leg return pipe will not be an issue,
as the two on the BX one is a seepage return and the other is just a vent, so you could just fit a BX leg pipe straight onto the XANT leg,

other than that i tend to agree with Mike as to ability to convert the XANT leg to fit a BX
