Speedo problem

Post by WitneyBX »

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me. My speedo is not working. Initially it was diagnosed that it was the cable that was the problem. I have since had the car looked at today buy a different garage who say its the drive gear thats the problem.
Now the question is what does this mean? Is it easy to fix? and more to the point is it cheap to do?
Any help greatly appreciated.

I think you need to understand & quiz them on what investigation led them to that conclusion. :?

Hopefully you/them are aware that the speedo cable comprises of two halves, an upper and a lower?

Welcome to BXClub :D

Let us know where you are based and we might have some suggestions about local garages who know the BX better.

There's a bit more info on Facebook - apparently the second garage has tested the speedo cable (which would have been my first blind guess) and it's OK, so it's likely to be the plastic helical drive gear in the gearbox at fault.

Thanks all, as Mat says the second garage has spun the cable and the speedo works. They says its the drive gear as Mat also says, no to sort out the problem with the electrics!

Probably a different speedo array but I look like having a spare TZD turbo unit if it helps. Only up the road in Faringdon.

Edit - I release I miss understood that. Not the speedo.

if it is the nylon drive gear at the diff here is price and part No.'s from citroen

this part is the geared collar that drives the pinion
Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
0000264302 TACHOMETR SCREW 4.35 GBP 5.22 GBP 5.22 GBP

this part being the pinion that directly drives the speedo cable
0000264911 CONTROL PINION 6.75 GBP 8.10 GBP 8.10 GBP

both of these parts are mylon or that type of material,

they can also both be replaced in situe and without removing the gear box
