TZD Radiator, Holy Grail...

Post by Dominic »

Its that time of year when the persistent drip of coolant starts costing money! I have given up trying to find a proper TZD radiator, but surely something else XUD-ish would work? Has anyone tried plumbing in a 309/405 (for example) rad into a BX?

Have you tried AEP for a rad?

Always good fun tracking down rads esp as my old 150C engine (ie 83-88) had the same rad as the 1.6 B2C engine (90+) but not according to the 2nd site you link to!.

Serck used to make direct replacements of good quality equivalent to the Valeo ones.

My local place can re-core a BX rad for £100, but when looking for a Rad for my GTI, all I could find on ebay was Diesel ones

Wasn't the 8v gti one the same as the diesel normally asprirated one?

This is again a need for time to tour a scrapyard. It need not be one large radiator as two would work, with a little bit of clever plumbing. Or would an oil cooler allow for a slightly smaller BX radiator, one that is available?
Fortunately I have picked up a spare over the year but this is clearly going to be a long term problem for one of the more popular types of BX.
Why is it this rad is hard to get? Well it seems to be a one off. But also its great size means it might be prone to early failure from resonant vibration despite the work that will have been done to design this out.

There's a GTi rad on Gumtree - new old stock, 75 quid, if that's any use to anyone.
I was planning on trying to find an alternative to the TZD rad sometime soon - I've got a couple of spares but one of them's suffering from all the cooling fins having corroded into dust....

These people seem to list new rads for lots of Cits, including BX TD:

The TD radiator is repairable, just take it in to a radiator fixing shop, they will weld it together if it's not too scrappy. (Other models aren't, as they have plastic end pieces).

Bought one for a TD recently from an ad on the CCC website and it too has metal sides so i guess they made both types with metal or plastic.
Cheap TD rads can be found, just got to keep looking.

The ones I've had which I know are original (3) have had plastic end caps, whereas the non-genuine one I currently have has brass. Not a massive sample to base an opinion on, but wondering if OE was aluminium/plastic and the all-metal ones are pattern parts?
