Keys locked in TZD

Post by kieran.l »

Mike (citsncycles) visited today with Timex. It was great to meet him and to see Timex in the flesh! When I was showing him my TZD however, I shut the door with the engine running and a few seconds later the car locked itself - the keys still in the ignition and the engine running  #-o
Its a good job Mike knew where the engine cut off was. In hindsight, the unusual clicking of the locks when the battery lead was being connected would suggest that something was wrong...
How to open the car? Any ideas. As its a public forum it might be best not to post potential ideas - maybe PM me.
Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery did nothing.
Thanks guys.

Oh yeah good point! Will see about deleting that. Although I reckon my cat could break into the BX with just his tail, claws (and maybe a spoon on a bad day).

I've locked my keys in the car before now. Not nice when it happens though. Luckily I had a spare to open it.

Just out of curiosity - How do you open one without the key?

Thanks Kevan and Vanny for coming to the rescue. Will try it tomorrow. (James thanks but hopefully I'm sorted).
I think a spare key needs to be cut...

Thanks for all the replies. I never thought of that, I expected something more technical.

I particularly liked that of my two Athenas either one's key will open the door of the other! Won't turn the wrong ignition though... or release steering lock. Real Citroen security, mind you a screwdriver smashed into the key lock in the door will do it at cost of lock as the little oiks did to my old 14, poor thing.

I would be interested in this as while I have my method it might be a superior one. With dogs in the car there is always a danger they will be made excited and lock the doors. Something the designers of these things never think about. Yep, I know you should always take your keys out. Well I do not as I am always doing stuff and I live in the countryside where stuff can be left unlocked for periods of time, so its not a habit I have.

They locked me out last week but fortunately I had my handy tool with me where I was working and salvaged the situation without having to get a lift home for the other keys. My method works on about 60% of cars of the era, some later and a lot earlier. Its not good practice though.

Ditto... although the only time it's happened to me away from home was at a jetwash, whenI absolutely had to be somewhere else imminently, so had to mangle a lock to get in in a hurry.

So a pm of an elegant/simple/non-destructive solution would be good!
