Very Sloppy Gearchange

Post by Tim Leech »

My newly aquired 19RD estate (yes THE estate) has very knackered gear selectors, so much so driving is quite an "experience"

Its going to need new parts and a bit of spannering which I am prepared to have a crack at....

Can anyone advise me what bis I need? Its a BE1 box with reverse to the left of 1st.

Thanks!

Your sure its not the gearchange linkages? If they've done 200k they must be at least a bit loose..

The bush in the bottom of the lever is knackered, so there's a fair bit of play in that. I also think the cotter pin on the input selector is badgered. Changed it on the Saxo a while ago.....made a massive difference to the gearchange.

Cheers Kitch/Tinkley, dont suppose anyone knows the part numbers or has any? I take it these can be done from inside the car?

Underneath for the lever, and jacked up through the wheel arch (normally) for the cotter pin. Worth disconnecting the linkages from the gearbox and seeing if the selector arm is floppy first though, just in case it's just a floppy gearbox. I know the bush at the bottom of the lever is definitely shot though, and that will have an effect on the play in the lever. I was just going to make one out of phozzy bronze or something, as I doubt they're available.

I had this problem on my car. It needed both long rods going from the gear stick to the steering rack replacing. They were so bad they just dropped off half the time.

As far as I am aware the linkage rods are still available. At least I got one (long one) from Citroen a couple of years ago. None of the aftermarket guys had any even though I found outdated listings on the web. That was for 1.6 with BE3 box.

The rods are easier to fit (they just pop off with a bit of leverage) but as Kitch has said they may not be the main cause of play. Worth checking how they feel though when you investigate further.

Feel for slop in the ball joints. I think I have a spare set of selector rods although were off a 200k tgd turbo with be3, but there was no slop in them. Nit sure if be1 rods are the same be3 rods. Check also the ball on the steering rack, maybe it' loose or thread gone?
