replaced lucas diesel pump

I have just replaced the diesel pump on my 1.7 turbo, what i would like to know is the correct way to bleed the injector pump and injectors. Thanks.

Do you have the rubber fuel bulb on the left hand side of the engine as you are looking at it? If you do, just keep pumping it until the bulb starts to get hard to press, that will purge out all of the air in the system. If you don't have the bulb, but rather the fuel canister button, do the same thing.

You'll probably need to loosen a bleed bolt too on the earlier type filter housing and hope the diaphragm isn't split...

Haynes covers it pretty well - IIRC on the lucas pump bleed the filter housing first, ignition off. Then with the ignition on pump more to bleed the injection pump.... you may also need to crack the injector pipes too after that while you're cranking to bleed those but to be honest repeated cranking with your foot down usually works but only in small bursts as the starter can overheat!

After having a very leaky filter housing while parked pointing up a steep hill I found the filter housings with the primer button useless but the primer bulbs, often used on outboard motors much better - ones with 10mm ends are available cheaply on ebay...

Ok thanks guys think there might be a problem with the pump, got fuel to the pump but no fuel coming out to the injectors. the pump came from a spare engine i have and was working fine. might try swopping the solanoid over see if that does anything.

The fuel won't come out of the injectors by just pumping the primer pump, you have to crank the engine to get fuel through to the injectors. Just crack open all 4 injectors half a turn (at the injector end and whilst someone is cranking your engine just nip one injector up at a time as they start to spit diesel and each cylinder will start firing as you nip them up with the engine running on all 4 when all nipped back up.

Then go back and bleed them all again with the engine running to get any last air out - the engine note will drop as you crack each one off, then should crisp up again as you tighten.
