Drive Shaft Noises

Post by hvanman »

Hi, I've noticed a clicking sound when turning from the N/S drive shaft (I think).

It seems to be worse when turning right.

Does this mean it's pretty much had it and a replacement is needed, or would some grease help it? (I have not been able to get underneath yet to check it properly)

Many thanks for any suggestions (and if a replacement needed, if anyone has a decent one for sale?)

Cheers, Simon

Just had this on my tzdt, a light clicking on little turn and a hell of a noise on full lock, almost certainly the cv joint shot, , got a decent new replacement driveshaft off the bay for £35.

first thing i would try is, dismantle the CV joint, clean it out with petrol, then re/assemble with new moly grease,

obviously whilst its in bits check for wear/damage to all the working surface's

if that doesnt sort it its a new joint required

i just the other week bought a new CV joint kit for my daughters Synergie for about £36 quid from my local

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will try and get it up the drive soon and take a look/feel. I will see if cleaning a re-packing helps, otherwise I'm torn between just a new CV joint, or whole new drive shaft. If the rest of the shaft seems OK I guess there is no real reason why it needs changing as an entire unit.

Gary is in need of this job as well. No doubt the boots are perforated and flood water has got in and finished off the joint. What is more worrying is if it is doing the same to the steering which has a dodgy rubber on it. Still I can now get in my garage after a day clearing out emergency bunged removal crap. So the day of reckoning approaches!

Had a look underneath now and the rubber gaiter has had it's wider end ripped off, so looking rather dry in there.... I've purchased a new drive shaft for £40 plus P+P as at that price at least I get all new gaiters, clips etc so can swap as quickly as possible.

For the price of the driveshaft its hardly worth changing just the cv, not sure which model of bx u have there bear in mind td's and gti's have the bigger diameter shafts. Ensure a new driveshaft oil seal is fitted when changing.

Also bear in mind there are a lot of aftermarket driveshafts out there which have different setups for fitting the CV joints etc, different diameter shafts, all sorts - I've found this before when trying to change CVs and finding they simply won't fit due to different types. If you're sure you've got originals, then replacing just the CV makes sense - the inners rarely fail as they're under nowehere near as much stress.

Yes a reasonable price, so not worth the hassle and the one purchased was listed for the 1.7 Turbo Diesel that mine is. I've just ordered a seal kit as I forgot about that, so thanks for the reminder.

KevR - Thanks, I'm replacing the entire shaft so as to avoid any miss-matches, as that did concern me.

Must admit I've never remembered to change the oil seals in 15 years and probably 200,000 miles of BX-ing with quite a few driveshaft changes!

For the sake of a few £'s i always change the driveshaft seals when removing the driveshafts, nothing worse than fitting a shaft twice due to a leaky seal, and annoying to boot. Been there done that lesson learnt. The seals are quite common to a lot of pug/cit and easily obtained from yr local factor.

I know, I know, and I've got several pairs on the shelf! I just always seem to forget to fit them.... Can't say I've noticed any significant leaks - or least nothing to challenge all the leaks from crank and cam and rocker cover as deserving of attention....

I've never had one leak either when I've left the old seals in, although I usually change them. Did have a scare once, when I appeared to have a significant leak from the long driveshaft's seal just after refitting the shaft. I'd only gone and forgotten to do up the intermediate bearing bolts...

It was a couple of years back, but I was picking up CV joints through GSF's Ebay shop fr about £16 a pop! Mind you I was using them on the GS, which makes for a huge saving against a complete shaft!
