gearbox blues

Post by Phil Brook »

At last my 1600 auto is back on the road . After new engine fitted I posted that within the week all the gears had disappeared. The garage suggested torque convertor which I bought £175.00- Fitted it still no joy! After transferring to a auto specialist it transpires the engine and gearbox were not fully alined. After a few miles the innards broke and destroyed the oil pump. Simple but expensive job to fit a new one. What I can't understand is that the mechanics couldn't have identified this. There is a load to see on u tube describing exactly this problem it shouldn't have needed an expert to sort it surely! The car has been off the road since August - 6 months to sort! Hopefully with valve seals, new bottom engine and gearbox repaired it should be trouble free for a while- here's hoping!!

Did the garage fit the new engine? if so surely they are responsible for the full cost of this repair including the torque converter if they didn't align the new engine and g/box properly?

I rang them today - they are going to get back to me with some sort of offer but I won't be paying for the repair that's for sure! I believe they will be fair having dealt with them for over 20 years! Whatch this space!!

Further to my auto problems. It may be that the Garage that did the work replacing valve seals and fitting the new bottom engine are not going to charge me for this work. I have paid out around £850.00 to another auto specialist to put everything right. This leaves me having paid £850 effectively for valve seals and fitting the new engine. Not having a clue how much this would cost I'm inclined to think it not bad and should accept this. Anybody got any guidance on this?
