quick camshaft question

Is there a difference between 17na and 19na camshafts? I have one of each (plus a TD one) and I'm trying to decide which to put in Timex and which to put in whatever engine (probably 19TD) that'll I'll get for Fred.

They are usually colour code for identification. So if they are the same colour or not then you will know.

The differences are covered in the Haynes diesel engine manual if you have one - I'm not with mine right now so can't say what they are. There are differences between the square and oval port 1.9 engines, so I'd think it likely the 1.7 cam is different again.

Ok, thanks Mat. I'll check the book of lies and see what it says. The camshaft I got from Jaba is one he got from you, so I suspect it's from an oval port engine, so I would assume It's profile will be set for greater airflow than the square port engine will provide. Conversly, the 17 square port cam will probably strangle the 19td engine. I suspect I know which cam may end up in which engine for now!

I also suspect I may be asking your advice again Mat!

Found my Haynes book, and while I dunno about lift, the 17NA cam has a longer duration than the 19NA, which in turn has a longer duration than the TD cam. On that basis I may put the 19NA cam in the TD engine and the 17NA cam in the 19NA engine, unless anyone thinks that's a bad idea.

The camshaft I got from Jaba is one he got from you

It was actually from a Peugeot 205, so would have been the 1769 cc engine. I think they all had the square ports. I remember picking the best looked after, lowest mileage 205 in the scrapyard with I think 85k on the clock!

I was struggling to remember why I didn't use it in the end, but then I remembered that David Rutherford gave me one...that must have been either lower mileage or possibly new

Ah, OK - he did mention that he had a 17NA one too, so maybe they both were. No matter, I need one to fit this engine I've just bought, and any NA cam will be better than what Timex is running at the moment.
