Post by MULLEY » Sat Mar 15, 2014 10:36 pm

Does anyone know what the part numbers are for these?

And how many different types of cables are there?

There are several types of each half of the speedo cable. To my knoweledge there's top halves for MK1 drum type, MK1 GT / Sport type and Mk2. For the bottom half there's the usual one for 16, 19 and diesel, suitcase engine and possibly TU engine (although I'm not sure about that last one). Then of course there's different lengths for LHD and RHD.

Looking at that, it says its the same for the Diesel, GTi & 4x4.
"DIESEL FUEL AND 4X4"
"4X4 AND GTI 16S"
That is rubbish! They are completely different!
The lower end of the 4x4 is a solid part coming from the transfer box to the upper end. The upper end then has a different fixing screw to attach it to the lower part.
Where do they get these ideas from?

I bet someone in accounting decided that they could rationalise their parts listings and save a bit of money - it's notthe first time they've done this and got it wrong. Several years back Citroen decided that they'd substitute a standard high tensile bolt for the one with an undersized head that bolts the pulley onto the crank on a 2CV. Of course there's a reason for the undersized head - if it were any bigger the required socket wouldn't fit down the tube the bolt goes down!
