Having chatted to Rob Moss on Sunday he confirms the TZI probably has a cracked exhaust manifold, the symptoms suggest it as its noisiest when cold and under load then quietens as it warms and the metal expands.

Surely the gasket would be the first suspect? The manifold is pretty easy to view top & bottom with a decent torch.

Apparently its quite common on those, if its a hairline crack and underneath its going to be quite hard to see. If it is the gasket I would rather have a spare manifold standing by just in case as its gotta come off anyhoo.
