Wheel Bearing Crisis

Post by Dominic »

What could be a more satisfactory way of spending my (single) day off this week, than closetting myself in the shed and doing the front wheel bearing. Got a replacement from AEP (extremely good next day service) and didn't think to open the box before tearing the old one out and consigning the old bits to the bin. Oh dear, they've sent roller bearings with a vast nut of indeterminate function and various other odd and unfamiliar bits (and no replacement 3" circlip). The AEP man says they have 4 alternative kits, and the one he sent matches up with my registration. Can there really be 4 different bearing types? Next problem, finding someone to lend me a car for the next 7 days before my next day off! :(

is this on the BX,
if so it only shows one front bearing for the hole BX range,
which also fits the list below

10 document(s) found for BERLINGO
7 document(s) found for ZX
2 document(s) found for BX
4 document(s) found for XSARA II
18 document(s) found for BERLINGO II VU
1 document(s) found for XANTIA
10 document(s) found for XSARA PICASSO
1 document(s) found for XANTIA II
15 document(s) found for BERLINGO II VP
24 document(s) found for XSARA

here is price and part No.

i know the OE price is a bit steep but you can either do a goooogly search, or aim the No. at the likes of GSF

If the nut is 35mm, that's your new hub nut. In my experience, the new bearing bears little resemblance to the bits that fall out when the old bearing is smashed to pieces to remove it.

It makes sense that there would only be 1 sort of bearing across the range- even the Haynes Book of Lies shows a section through balls - anyhow the nice man at AEP eventually conceded that he'd sent a bearing for a Citroen Relay - whatever that it. New one on its way. Crisis nearly over...

This is one of those things where I like to rescue a couple of spare hubs from a scrapper, fit new bearings and ball joint at my leisure, then change the whole unit - saves a lot of downtime and potential hassle. It's always a sod when you get the thing apart, find the new bits are wrong so you have to send them back, while your car's in bits and you still have to get to work on monday....
While you're rescuing the spare hubs, grab a pair of wishbones and a bottom engine moun too!
