Diesel Heavy Fuel Consumption

Post by kiwi » Wed Jul 30, 2014 6:50 am

The last two fill ups (brim to brim) as always I noted fuel consumption had gone from the reasonable (for here) 10-11 miles per litre down to 9.5 and 8.74. This got me a bit perplexed given the last tank full has been used for a couple of long runs. However she also has been doing a bit of hill climbing in cold weather up to the ski area. This last fill up was bit surprise and yes I do keep good records.

One note though is I have done an oil change in the last 100 miles cut down on a bit of smoke it also seems. Would there be a fuel pump issue I need to attend to or could adjust? Not encountered this before certainly not this heavy a fuel use in 30,000 miles driving this BX.

Your '92 TXD possibly has the later plastic fuel filter housing just above the fuel warming thingy - the plastic housing is prone to cracking and can leak fuel. It should be still available since it is used on later models (Xantia ?) but it's a long way from cheap.

Hi,
Check the easy items first:-

1 Wheels running free - braked binding ?.
2 Change the air filter.
3 Diesel fuel leaks?

Good luck

Checked! I am going to see if cold weather factor and hill climbing made a huge differance. Potential those soft winter tyres played a factor as it was also rather warm when I did the long runs. So this is still ongoing.
