Needed urgently vacuum advance unit for gti 8v

Post by rutter123 »

Think i may have got to the bottom of the running issues ( thanx to citroenbaz @ Bourne Citroen) have taken the vac ad off and opened it up to find a split daiphram hence no timing advance, have searched high and low but to no avail. Bosch dizzy part no 0237009607 which is only used on jetronic xu9j2 fitments but no numbers on the vac ad, have only found on the bay a dizzy from a pug 405 1.6 which looks pretty identical??
Will it work?
Or a part number for the correct vac ad would be better.
3091 is stamped into the vac ad pull rod but this refers to pug 205gti?

Any help would be good, thanx.

Req as a matter of urgency.

You could try making one from innertube
The Joy of BX with just one Citroën BX to my name now. Will I sing Bye Bye to my GTI or will it be Till death us do part.

Try ignitioncarparts.co.uk

If they don't have it then they can repair yours for you. I think for £30ish

I went down the hunting for vac advance units route with my BX14 and its quite hard to find them isn't it!.

They even had a whole distributor unit for the suitcase engine!

Part arrived today, fitted and working, noticed an instant change on the idle (needed air mixture adjustment) certainly cured the long standing running issues, i now have timing that advances properly and fully, i suspect the split diaphram was also causing an air leak post airflow meter.

Glad that unit sorted the problem. Even the humble 1.6 requires a check on the tube for the advance/retard occassionally. Probably just old age and polymer/rubber getting tired.

Took the old unit apart and the diaphram has a pin hole in it and the backing has gone very hard and varnishy, i expect its prob the original unit and has done well to last 24 years.

Are these a easy job to change? My 8v GTi is being a pig hesitating between tickover and 2.5k when your holding speed, drives fine throughout the rest of the rev range. Changed the dizzy, rotor, leads and plugs. Seems to have made it worse lol

Yes easy enough, best to remove the dizzy first ,just 2 small screws hold the vac ad on it just goes over the cam in the dizzy. Check all your vacuum hoses and air intake hoses for cracks or leaks, chances are your supplementary air device (cold idle/choke valve) is stuck open, most of them are shagged and cause the mixture to lean right out due to too much unmetered air entering the inlet manifold on idle and low rpm, best way to check is strip down every piece of rubber air pipe and check them thoroughly, or replace as much as you can, i also made a gasket for the inlet manifold as they dont have one, eliminating air leaks will cure some issues.
You csn check the vac advance in situ by sucking on the pipe, remove tt from the throttle body end suck on the pipe put your tongue on the end of the pipe if the suction holds then its ok and should release with a pop. If not its prob shagged, only a pin hole in the diaphram will upset your advance. Also check the vac advance metal pipe on top of the throttle body is not clogged up. Your spark plugs should give you give you a pretty good idea of how things are going inside, of all the bits i replaced plugs, leads, cap and arm, coil, tps, temp sensor, fuel pump and filter and relay, fuel pressure regulator and fuel lines, ignition pick up, having the injectors ASNU cleaned was the only significant improvement, good luck.

Depending on how the injectors were cleaned, "in tank" injector cleaners are rubbish same applies for most other types of cleaners, the only proper way is ASNU cleaning about £60 for all 4. Brought the emmisions down from 5.7 to just over 3.0 which is good enough for mot emissions pass and also improved the idle which is now rock steady at 900rpm, beforehand hunting between 900-1100, wiring can also cause issues esp the earth to the airflow meter ecu and i rewired the injector loom as corrosion/dry joints to some terminals was evident.

Agreed, ASNU is the only effective long term way forward. It includes a service replacement of the filters, ,pintle caps and 'o' rings too, All these other 'in tank' products can cause even more gumming up of the injectors after an initial 'boost'.
