This one's been popping up recently. Can't seem to shift it. To be honest, it'll need a fair few quid and time spending on it I would guarantee, but at a £300 starting point, it might be a tempting option. You could spend twice that and still have lots to do... If it got broken it would be a shame as the GTi is a rare beast indeed...

It's got the wrong bonnet for a GTI.

This one is less than 5 miles from me. I think you'll find the seller got it from Liverpool area at around £200. If anyone wants I can look at it and feedback. Knowing the pikeys round here like these for crushing, it's amazing to see it in one piece - scrap value too low I suppose. One 'lad' who'd like to crush mine reckons he's done 25....

I suppose I could give him a cheeky offer and convert it to a 1.6 though!. One of the shots shows moderate damage somewhere which rather put me off, however if the body is actually not rusty except the very odd spot and sound round rear subframe etc it might be a decent shell. Trouble is I don't really want a 1.9, rather have the 1.6 with carb. Otherwise it would be worth going the whole hog and a 16v. 1.9 n/a diesel would be OK too.

Have you ever driven a GTi? They are a BX with a character all of their own, and I had more fun driving them than any other breed including 16v and diesels...

How does a 19TRS compare Tim?

Convert a 1.9 to 1.6, no way. That's nearly as bad as putting a 1.9d in a 16v [-X.

It's not as quick but they are both torquey, the GTi is better top end and very flexible. My GT is a lovely drive and your TRS is very similar.

I always enjoyed driving my 8valve Gti, its got an extra 20 ponies over the 1.9 carb, which in a lightweight BX makes a fair difference.

Yeah, maybe but a lot easier....

TBH I'm actually more concerned with the economy of the thing. OK petrol prices have fallen (to lever Putin more than anything) but at £1.40 per litre is the GTI really going to do 40 mpg on short trips and 50 mpg on a long run? I'm sure it would be a nice drive with the extra ooomph esp if no cat in the system and not much extra weight. So Phil I've not been in a GTI or driven one, no doubt it is quite er er useful with 125 claimed Horses but round here a single horse is almost more use on these single track with passing place type roads!. Except when I need to load up the fallen logs for winter firewood!.

I managed 36mpg in my Gti, most of the time it was 30 or less, but i didn't exactly try driving it economically. I reckon if you kept at a steady 60, on a run you may achieve 40mpg?
