MOT failure Citroen BX

Post by speedingfine »

I've just been offered £50 for scrap for the car, and would much rather it went to someone from here for nothing.

The car a 1989G 1400E with 85000 miles. It's just had £70 of new tyres on the back, a new battery. It runs and the hydraulics don't leak, but the engine does leak a little unfortunately. It has a noisy gearbox too, but everything else works fine and I had a lot of fun with it. It failed the mot on a sheared radius arm on the back and it needs a small amount of welding on the one top mount. All the electrics work, there are no water leaks or smells of damp in the car and it is in good general condition all round. TLC and it could last someone a while, otherwise, please do use it for spares!

The car is at a garage near Kidderminster in the West Midlands and you will need a trailer to take it home as the MOT is up.

Call me if interested as it will be collected next week!

That looks like a very tidy car - no sunroof too - so extra headroom (++!) and less water leaks and less rust in the A-piller area! I wonder what a ' sheared radius arm' is? anti-roll bar? -is the car driveable? kind offer though, all sounds very fixable! Steve

Yes, the headlining is lower in factory sunroof cars to accommodate the sunroof cassette. :-)

'Sheared radius arm' mmmmm now this could be one of two? three? things AFAIK. Firstly the bearings have totally collapsed and the arm has cracked?. Perhaps the bolt has sheared internally?, so a kit (still available) would sort it out, as this has a new bolt (and bearings etc). The more tricky thing is if referring to the subframe mount which has partly disintegrated so the 'radius arm' (and one side of subframe) is floating about on one side. Still possible to repair, both sides of mine have been welded and back sill end cap replaced and primed, cost approx 300 which is not bad especially as the welding is very neat. Maybe you need get some quotes off a more specialist repairer ie small enthusiast outfit with low overheads before binning this car.

The arms are pretty tough things, as ductile cast iron and I would think you have to leave the bearings a long time, maybe several years in shot condition to actually break it. The XM ones in aluminium alloy are a different ball game....

I would not be surprised if it is just knackered bearings so the arm is 'moving' as the races have been cracked and ground to dust. The bearings are approx 20 quid a side, search the Forum for the replacing rear arm bearings threads - lots of info. To the MOT station they might class this 'movement of the arm as 'sheared' well I suspect they are wrong and don't know their BX....
Not too hard a job to do btw, but the arms are reasonably heavy so make sure you support the weight of them OK, and don't lose the shims.

Right, come up someone man up and take this guy up on his offer! I've got four of the bastards (and currently, no trailer), and room for no more, but I know some of you have room for a free car!
It's a rare model (might be a Leader, looking at it), and it will have the TU engine not the suitcase jobbie, so the gearbox will be exceptionally easy to source and fit, as so many other cars use the same bits. If the body's tidy, and you get the rest up to scratch, you're looking at £800 worth of car. Possibly more, if it's really good.

The diesel bubble is about to burst in city centres, as Labour backtrack on the whole cheaper VED for diesels gig they started years ago, as it turns out they're actually not cleaner for the air (no.....really??! You don't say! ) So when the climate change brigade start on diesels, they'll get expensive to run.

Good on you for offering this on here mate. The little TU 1.4 engine is great in the BX.

Better for someone to take it as a going concern, but if not, that looks rather like a non sunroof shell in the right colour for my silver 16v which is a bit ropey, bodywise...

That looks like a 14E leader, which is a rare old beast these days, a rear arm is a easy fix! You could make a tidy profit on that even if you didn't keep it!

I have no space.

Engine mounts will not be the same as a valver and that will cause you real problems.
