Henry in Polgate selling the BX'S he saved (picys now added)

Post by citronut »

myself and Mr Chris Salter went to see the two BX's HENRY rescued late 2012'ish,

he will be loosing the space were they are stored so is offering them for £100 each,

he is very reluctant to scrap them,

they have both had rodents attempting to re/wire them  #-o ,

when i opened the bonnet on the mark two a big fat rabbit leaped out from the O/S of the engine bay straight across the N/S wing and did a runner,

Chris Salter did take some photos, and i will see if he can post them here

That mk1 is a definite bargain, they're getting into proper classic money now.

I started entertaining silly ideas of putting the engine out of the 14 that's on my drive into it until I remembered that the mk1 will have the suitcase. Probably for the best. Still a bargain though for someone with the space and inclination to get it sorted.

that 16RE in Magnetic blue with the stripes (factory fit I think) is now uber rare indeed!

Thankfully too far away for me.

Yup, the suitcase 150C engine was the norm until approx August '88 well into Mk 2 territory. I can't see any problem putting a TU in, as you have the existing engine mounts, off the donor. Remember the front subframe is the needle roller version and is better converted to the later rubber bush type for the wishbones. Unless there are serious wiring differences it ought to fit. Later type exhaust obviously from manifold, and the gearbox is different (non unit) so you will need the newer driveshafts etc. I'm sure the gear linkages could be made to work. Might need the lower engine mount off the later one but as you'll likely do the subframe no big deal. Of course if you prefer a leaded only 4 star engine.... and LRP works but not as well....

The real problems are petrol to diesel and vice versa.....

lot of work to cut out the inner wings from both the MK1 14 and the TU 14 bodyshells just to convert the MK1 shell to a TU car,

as the suitcase engine mounts onto the sub frame and the TU hangs from the inner wings

Apologies Malcolm, I thought the chassis and wings were identical. The 1.6 and 1.9 were available in Mk 1 form so assumed the mount holes would have been there just redundant. I obviously don't remember my old 14 well enough in that area, though well aware of the different mounts for that one. It's been almost 11 years since I said goodbye to her!.

the 1.4 suitcase engine is agricultural but in a Mk1 I guess it kinda adds to the quirkiness.

I would have saved the 14 with 150C but for the fact the legislation against leaded engines and the removal of LRP was on the agenda poliically at the time. The chassis was still basically sound and apart from from one high pressure pipe (front to rear) going (and replaced) it was OK. It had done 175k and the damage that the 'pikey' thieves had done trying to steal her ie cooking the head gasket, etc made it a hard choice.

At the time 2004 I made the choice to find another BX but designed for unleaded. I don't regret buying the 1.6 Athena, merely the fact that two drivers seemed to find it a target, ironically both women. It could have been men but I don't differentiate, they were both bad drivers, full stop. Hence the current rather rust bucket Athena (from ooop north), at least it is still running OK.... and I'll cure the LHM super slow leak, promise.... It's had new Octopus, and little one so return from rear height corrector is first on list of inspection...
